Surely not if he's on loan?

The Premier League are the outlier on that, most leagues let loan players play against their parent club.

There's no Champions League rule against it, it just depends whether we put a clause in the loan agreement that says he can't.

edit - as an example, Coutinho scoring twice against Barcelona while on loan at Bayern.

Ah yes, had forgotten that. I think the Premier League are right in this case, it's silly to allow it. Hopefully we put a clause in saying he can't play against us.

I don't think it's strange. We sold Dougie and opted for two young players with a lot of potential in
exchange. In midfield we've got Onana, Tielemans, McGinn, Barkley, Rogers, JJ, Bailey, Philogene, and possibly Barrenachea, with Kamara on the way back too. Maybe we could have used him as a wing back, but I can't see him getting much playing time for us this season.

Suppose I was thinking what are we going to learn about him playing for Bologna that we didn't see when he was at Juventus, just expected him to be around either our squad or an another PL one. In truth I am really still just unhappy that we have come out of the Doug deal looking to be on the wrong side of it.

Depends how he goes. If he has a really strong season at Bologna then his value rockets and Villa have a very decent profit on their hands, or he comes back and replaces Digne at the end of his contract 12 months more experienced at a high level of football.

Going back to centre half, Geertruida may still be available now as the other centre half they were looking to shift to Athletico Madrid has fallen through and Athletico are taking Lenglet on loan instead.  Still number 1 priority for me

Another loan for Lenglet, I remember when he was an up and coming CB worth a potential fortune. Never quite happened for him, but wonder what his actual value is now if someone actually bought him. Suspect less than £10m would get him outright

Too slow for our level

Yep. Geertruida and Chalobah in this week would do me. Although with Illing Jnr going, Diaby gone, we could definitely do with a forward with a bit of guile that could slot in at 10 or wide.

Geetruida or Chalobah plus one megasuperduperstar winger type and I'm happy. Maybe one more defender on loan for emergencies.

Fair point. It's possible we'll come out really well from the deal, but it's definitely one we've taken a gamble on, and we won't know one way or the other for a while.

Who's the actual back up for Bailey who will miss games with knocks?

Yes SJM can play out wide but plenty of games we'll need his experience central (Arsenal away last season) when injuries hit or the opposition require it.

It's great to have JPB back but potentially starting away to Real Madrid or Barca in a few months will be a little different to playing for Hull v Rotherham so I'd prefer another experienced player in the squad.

I don't rate him that highly but Bailey with Sterling as back up for a CL night sounds exactly what we should be doing and it then gives flexibility to start Sterling in the league fixture 3-4 days later.

Currently though due to the relationship between the two clubs it just reads as Chelsea have offered us him, we're not that interested and he'll just be loaned out to someone abroad.

Who is JPB?

*yawn*

I find people getting his name wrong equally tiresome, with added disrespect. But thanks for your input, whatever your name is. I forget, and I hold you in such low regard, I can’t be bothered to look up and get it right

Considering he’s been on our books for 6/7 years and was always known under his previous name until very recently it’s hardly surprising that people get his name wrong and it’s not as though no one knows who’s being talked about.
Disrespect…ok. I’m sure you’ll be pulling people up on Joe, Ratface and any other non official name that anyone cares to call players. God forbid anyone mentions Andy Cole.

Yeah he was Jaden Philogene-Bidace coming through the youths and on the bench for us in his first spell so genuinely didn't realise he'd dropped the Bidace part so will remember when critiquing his future performances.

His jersey just says Jayden now, so I have no idea what to be referring to him as.

Starting to get a bit nervous that weee not going to replace diaby.  I know our midfield looks better but our defence is weak - certainly til mings is back and forward line is inexperienced.

Hopefully we’re in for a lot of games this season and last season come the end most our players looked like me on the last day of a stag weekend - odd moments of brilliance - but buy and large body and mind are gone and prone to shitting the bed

Our forward line has Bailey and Watkins in it. Duran, for all the nonsense off the pitch, is also now regularly making an imapct off the bench. I know he wants more than that but I do think we're getting to the stage now where he can finally be trusted to start some prem matches and we'll rest Ollie probably one league game a month.

I'm in two minds about getting in another attacker. Yes important for depth but at same time Rogers looked fantastic end of last season, pre season and he had some brilliant runs v West Ham so I personally wouldn't want to stall that progress as I think in next six months he'll have most pundits raving about him and demanding he's in the England squad.

Signing someone like Joao Felix and starting him ahead of Rogers based on reputation would go against all Unai has created in the last 18 months.

I think I agree with you about Rogers. Especially now Ramsey is back to give us strength on that left-hand side, and hopefully Little Emi can come back firing. Let’s not forget that Tielemans played number 10 in the epic double-header last December as well. Picked over Diaby in both games. I suggest we keep our powder dry when it comes to replacing Diaby unless Duran goes as well. I’m definitely in favour of signing the Dutch RB/CB though.

With Iling-Junior going out on loan, Rogers can also be an option to play on the left which further frees up the 10 slot for a signing.

For the umpteenth time, I wish Unai would just go get Pulisic from Milan. He'd be perfect as the Diaby replacement/Bailey cover and probably cost around 25 million.

Barring maatsen and onana we havent really strengthed the team at all. Was hoping illing jr would be kept to give us squad depth. But if you look at the other players barkley enzo and JPB these are just squad players that will be rotated across the season.

Dont think the squad as a whole is string enough to get CL aagin this season. But lets hopefully i am wrong
