You can guess if it’s been any good or not, but I don’t think you can tell if you’ve had a good/shit transfer window until it’s been tested in football matches.

Yep. I've been saying for years that a good window is 2-3 players in and out (excluding kids) but things have turned into such a circus in the last 15-20 years that everyone seems to have decided that massive upheaval of the squad season after season is a good idea.

I'm slightly worried that we're being forced to do a little too much this summer but I hope that the Emery factor outweighs that.

I know what you mean, but doing it now from a position of strength is the key.

Absolutely, if you need a big refresh it's better to be doing it with money in the bank and with a fairly strong team despite the handful of outgoings. I still worry it's going to be too big a change though, Liverpool is a very recent example of just how difficult it can be. Lets not forget they apparently had a terrible summer window 2 years ago, before winning the league. Stability and familiarity are wildly undervalued in football.

And yet when they only bought (I think),  one player, Chiesa, who hardly played, they ran away with the league. Not a Liverpool fan, so not sure how many they kept - the vast majority I suspect.

He’s decent but overpriced, which is par for the course this window. I suspect that his agent is working overtime to get him a move. We’ll probably end up with a signing we least expected and he’ll end up on loan somewhere he didn’t want to be.

I reckon we have been fattening up for a sale this season. To obtain the highest transfer fee for a British player that cost a pittance only two and half years ago is quire incredible.
It’s what we do with the funds available now and there will be funds available no matter what the Nay sayers bore us with.
At least I understand the definition of a big club now is one that can pay big wages and football ambition comes a long way second.

If we have learned anything about Unai is that he can take the shittest of starts and turn it into a CL qualification via the league and major trophy. So I'm confident he will turn the losses of Digne, Tielemans and Rogers into a very competitive side operating in the top 6 for most of the season. And as they all get use to his system and structure I wouldn't at all be surprised if we are top 5 again. It might not be entirely evident in October. It will be by May.

he is VL. He's the one thing that will always reassure us of the path we are on. I've had my moments of weakness during our iffy spells and ultimately proven completely wrong. Delightedly so.
