We were successful because of the manager and players already here. Trying to claim a 40% hit rate was good when half that was a 35yo backup keeper while probably best part of 40m wasn't wanted a few months later is a tad bonkers.

The main summer transfer window saw us sell Ramsey and fuck up the team morale for a month or so, along with the Martinez palaver. Get Elliot in and play him 7 times. Get the most expensive purchase in and loan him out after 6 months. And two backup freebies who were the best ones.

The winter one saw us sell Malen who scored 15 goals after leaving and replace him with someone who played 400 mins, get in Allysson who is perenially "injured", get in a player we can't even register yet, and bring back Doug who did a small job but was dropped as soon as possible.

The only good things coming out of last years windows might well have been that we stayed compliant with SCR/PSR etc enough that we don't have to worry about it much this season so long term it probably was a "good" one. However from a playing point of view, you can't help feeling we achieved a trophy and CL qualification despite the window and also wonder what we might have done if it had been "better".

The manager isn’t really part of the transfer window, unless he’s so pissed off with it he leaves. But the overall squad at the beginning and the end of it is, and success or failure of a football squad is determined by results. The players that were there already were still there at the end of the transfer window. That’s not always the case in a transfer window. Sometimes, if they’re not, it can be a bad transfer window. Sometimes, it can be a good thing. If only there was a way to judge it, like I dunno, play football matches?

We got fined for failing compliance didn’t we? We could have sold McGinn, Rogers and Martinez, bought a couple of players that people on forums liked, won the transfer window like West Ham and Liverpool and finished sixth and lost to Forest. But I prefer to judge football teams and squads and transfers in and out on football results.

I realise it’s not for everyone.

So Arse only willing to go to £80m and Chelsea payed £117! Great work, obvs we the club would let him go at the right price. A huge gamble for home though, no CL footy and a new manager who could be gone in a few months. He could be a shadow of what he was with us if they don’t treat him like he was here.

In fairness we didn’t win for our first 5 games and only scored once, looked genuinely terrible and in some deep trouble. Buendia, Rogers and Cash found some form and collectively dragged us through into a brilliant position by Christmas. We then struggled  again following injuries. I don’t think it was unfair to say our dealings were pretty poor with the limited funds we had, but we did extremely well to keep some of our bigger players.

This summer is the opposite, lost big players so have room to manoeuvre. On paper the 2 in look very good, but Percy is also right in that we can’t judge until they are entrenched in.

I was in a minority there, and the same with Buendia. I’ve always liked him and didn’t want us to sell him, but a lot of Villa fans did.

We kept them both in a transfer window. Those decisions and dozens more are made during a transfer window. Success or failure is determined by the outcomes of those decisions.

I would credit Buendia with keeping Buendia. By all accounts he was gone then put everything in to the Palace game second half and refused all options to go. Deserved everything he got last season the little man.

Also why I think we have to sign 2 very good wide options this summer. Yes Manzambi and McGinn will most likely play there, but we need much, much better options to rotate and change games. We can’t just keep hoping Rogers will hit one.

Imagine thinking “vibes” and hilariously innaccurate ratings mean more than the “statistics” that appear in the top left-hand corner of the TV screen when the football’s on, and the points that decide positions in the league table. 66 by the way, even though you think it’s irrelevant.

I prefer to judge football players and teams on the results that they get. I realise it’s not your thing. Anyway, I hope you enjoy the open-top bus parade if we win the Transfer Window cup.
