Transfer windows do really weird things to people. The point of transfers is to improve the team. The team went from having won fuck all forever to being European trophy winners. What's wrong with that?

The transfer window was largely shit. We did well due to a world class manager getting the most ot of signings made in previous windows (plus Lindelof). Not a contoversial thing to say I wouldn't have thought.

It was a shit window. Guessand was gone after 6 months, Elliott was bizarre, Sancho peaked at ok a few times. Lindy and Bizot were solid but we spunked most of our limited budget on 3 players that were nowhere near vfm and contributed very little and offered no VORP.

Who did we sell?

What did those 3 do for the money spent that 3 academy players couldn't have done?

But keeping all of our key players is as big a part of the transfer window as signings. Overall the window was fine, not transformational as this year will be but enough. Lindy and Bizot were big improvements.

Wasting money is clearly a problem, but it's not isolated to one specific window.

As SE says, transfer windows shouldn’t be treated as a standalone thing. They’ve been fetishised since becoming windows (“they’ve won this window” etc), but they’re just a small part of the season. I’m with Percy in that they can only be judged by the end result.

And how "good" the transfer window was should also be seen in the context of us not selling Emi, Rogers, Watkins, Kamara etc.

Just like this window will be judged on what we've sold (for good or bad) as well as what we buy.

A case in point. We lost Benteke, Delph and Vlaar didn’t we? And ended up getting relegated. Which just goes to show that judging a window just on incomings and dismissing who you managed to keep, and even more importantly, results, is wrong IMO.

When you spend 10s of millions on players you don't want 6 months later then it's a failure, especially when the bloke in charge of signings is binned off because of it.

Transfers go both ways. 2/5 good incomings. About 15 good keeps. 1 sale where for me the jury’s out (JJ). Failure? I’d always check the results.

Personally I think the pre-relegation transfer window was a more of a failure than the pre-trophy & CL qualifying one.

They do but we were hardly fighting off worthwhile bids either. A club in our position can't keep fucking up incomings and relying on those already here as they're getting older. I'm much more optimistic so far this window despite the outgoings. As i've said before we've opened up a lot of exciting possibilities.

That’s good then. Let’s hope your optimism is not as misplaced as last season’s pessimism (not just yours, nothing personal here). I don’t think there were many who ranked last summer’s transfer window as highly as me.

I’m guessing on Scousers & Scallies most thought theirs was great and didn’t foresee the decline from runaway champions to fifth.
