But you also have to make sure people don't see you as a walkover. Rogers will have been well aware of the price if he wanted to go, if he was the type to strop then that's up to him.

If we sell him we could retire his number and pretend he’s still our player for the next 10 years.

Indeed and with a 5 year contract it’s entirely against his interest - plus he doesn’t seem the sort.

The cartel need to be broken up. Such a shame Spurs didn't get relegated.

It's so obvious for 20-25 years some clubs are deemed too big to fail and simply must have any player they like.

How's it a 'sport' anymore? Yes, it's always been a thing but focussing specifically on Spurs for a moment a team who battled relegation two years in a row shouldn't be able to take players from teams who have been much more competitive than they have been.

Newcastle were convinced they'd keep Isak, and in the end, it destroyed their summer window and season.
Unfortunately, you have to be realistic once the player decides he wants to go.  I don't for a minute think Rogers would go on strike, but once his mind is made up, it becomes a matter of time.  It seems like we may well be getting to that point.
My guess is he'll go for about £100m, give or take.  I don't think that would be a great deal for us with the Boro sell-on clause, but otherwise, Arsenal will disrupt our whole summer.
Has Rogers made up his mind to go?

We don't know, but when there's this much reporting and comment that he has agreed terms with Arsenal, it usually only goes one way.

And if Manzambi is already in the building as Rogers direct replacement, we won't have to suffer the same level of disruption as Newcastle

let’s not worry about it. We’ve signed (hopefully ) Manzambi who can fill in that position. Arsenal can agitate all they like, but inevitably they will stump up whatever fee we deem appropriate or they’ll walk off and sign Barcoler or whoever. Rogers will pick his rattle up, re-focus and be absolutely fine.

but what is the incentive for us to drop our price by the best part of a quarter? How does that help us in any way? Sure he might sulk a bit but come the end of the window he either gets on with it and makes them happy to pay the full price in January or the move disappears because he looks like a tit.

Yes Newcastle fucked themselves last season but in truth that was more that they've got a shit manager and spent really poorly. By sticking to their guns on value they've set a marker that they're not going to fucked with and it's meant Barca just got on with it for Gordon and Spurs got to the point of paying the asking price pretty quickly for Tonali. We need teams to realise we're not going to be manipulated into selling below value by them leaking stuff to the press every few days and creating shit for us. Pay the money or fuck off needs to be the stance if we ever want to really break into the cartel.

We should be honoured a club like Arsenal are interested in one of our players and should work with them to make sure they get a deal they are happy with.

I appreciate that you are aiming for humour and it's directed at my post, but I'm not sure I've said anything that remotely indicates that is my position.

Either he goes or he doesn't.  I've just guessed what I think may happen.  It's just football fans chatting shit on the internet.

I agree with Paul, I'd love to stick it to the Cartel.  I'm just not sure we will / can.

It was aimed at the media circus thinking it's a done deal.

but still  why do you think we'll take £30m less than the price we've pretty clearly set?

It's just a guess Paul.  I feel we are probably under more SCR pressure than people think, and the moves we have made/are planning to make are based on securing the Rogers money.  I also think he probably wants to go.  But I'm no expert on the financial regulations and I appreciate that people on here have made very well-reasoned arguments to the contrary.  Like I said, it's just fans chatting shit on the internet. I know no more than anyone else.

We'll see.  I won't gloat if I'm right and will be delighted if I'm wrong.
