My gf really likes the Zacapa, but I think the best I've ever tasted was a 24 year old Matusalem.

No coke, though, or ice.

The same with other cask-matured spirits: when I walk into a bar and ask for a really nice old single cask malt whisky, and the bartender asks me: "Do you want it on the rocks?"  (Shudder) "No thanks, no ice, just with a splash of water in a separate glass to allow it to open up a bit..." Surely, that's barkeeping 101?

I really can't remember being asked that when asking for a good Cognac or Armagnac.

The vast, vast majority of people drinking whisky in pubs/bars in the Uk are doing it with at least ice and then probably half with a mixer.

Yep, and us ice-cold bastards look down on those mixer types, too.

I think if you are drinking single-malts and fine spirits, I agree that then polluting them with mixers and ice is silly. But Jack Daniels, Captain Morgans, etc... you're not ruining anything.

*** We interrupt this alcohol discussion with actual Morgan Rogers news ***

According to Jacob Tanswell in The Athletic, Villa want to keep Rogers for at least another year, but are expecting a lot of interest. £100m would be the 'starting figure' for discussions.

The thing that annoys me about the article on the BBC website this morning is that there is no hint of any possibility that as the would be selling club, ie Villa, have the player under contract for several years they just might not be willing or needing to entertain a sale of that player to any club, let alone a rival.

This is laughable that they have grouped Rogers with Kroupi who has done 1/3 of fuck all other than half a useful season and Alvarez has no where near the same influence on a game as Morgan.

"Rogers and Kroupi are expected to cost in excess of £80m each, while Barcelona target Alvarez is being valued at more than £120m."

If he wants to leave, and for the generational money I wouldn’t blame him, then off he can go. We only want committed players.

Only the fans have a life long journey with our club.

In my lifetime… to name a few, Andy Gray, Hodge, Platt, Delph and Grealish all off they fxxked, and we’re still here, celebrating trophies.

Yes and your Christian name reminds me of the time of how distraught I was when Andrew Greaves left.

I quite like Morgans Spiced Gold on the rocks, in a Villa glass.

Shudders. :)

If you can get it on special (it's normally around £45 in Sainsbury's), treat yourself to some El Dorado 12 year old. Delicious.
See, I'll generally not pay more than about £25 for rum and maybe £30 for whisky.  I just think after that point it's diminishing returns, you're adding 50% or more to the price but it's maybe only 5% better.

Strongly agree here - if I'm having whisky, it'll be roughly (1) pour whisky in a glass (2) add about half as much water as whisky.

I wonder when the media will start upsetting other teams players in favour of us?

From the start of next season all of our players have as much chance of winning every trophy they are entered into as much as anyone else, including Arsenal. It is only the hinderance of not being able to financially compete with the scum 6 that holds us back.

If we were able to shop at the same level as Red filth, P.lop, Arsenal etc then we could bring players to the club that would make ours want to stay and be part of it.

I fear that if he has an expected good WC all and sundry (yet to hear from Red filth who identify every player to keep the plastic fans awake) will be linked

Always remember a Christmas soiree back in the day.  It was really for my mate's parents' friends, but he was allowed to invite a few of us.  All very embarrassing when we just wanted to be down the pub.  Anyway, said mate's dad fancied himself as a bit of connoisseur when it came to whisky.  He comes around proffering some expensive single malt to the "grown ups".  Another friend's dad accepted and was poured a generous measure.  He then asked where the ice was... The host literally snatched the glass back and said if he wanted ice there was a Bell's somewhere in the kitchen and to go and help himself.

Spirit-related anecdotes or recommendations to keep this thread going until Arsenal make a derisory offer?

Exactly. If you're going to drink bells, you can mix it with dog shit and it's no worse off.

JD, Captain Morgans, all that stuff isn't worth worrying about.

For early clues as to whether or not he'll be starting for England, he's been given the #17 shirt, Bellingham has #10.

Which doesn't mean that he won't be picked ahead of Bellingham, but it's possibly a clue as to who has the edge.

They do. Every club is subject to it to some degree.

We go shopping and the clubs on the receiving end of our interest feel the same way we do when clubs come for our players.

All the clubs in this country are subject to Real  Madrid coming calling.

It's the food chain and we need to get higher up it, winning the Europa, and qualifying for the Champions League again are all big steps on the way.

Emery develops players, er sell, make a profit and we move on.
