He should be the last player we're looking to sell, we should be building a team around him. This season I think he's suffered growing pains to be the player he and we all want him to be. Next season I truly believe it will all come together for him and he'll have an amazing season.

For Arsenal / Man Utd / Bayern etc...

This is less about what the Villa wants and ore to do with his ambitions to win leagues / CLs.  I actually think we are more likely than at any point since I've been an adult (I'm in my 50s) to have an outside chance of a title challenge, if we keep the core players and add 2 top quality options up front adn as cover in midfield.   Does Rogers feel that way?  That's probably the key to all of this, along with the enormous amount more money he could earn at a club playing in cheat mode financially.

One wonders if the plan all along has been for him to go and that's part of the reason Emery has played him for every game. Now he's got World Cup too he'll not be the same next season, or will flag as it goes on..

If they planned for him to go I would suspect it’s less likely they’d play him all the time.

A good report and good to see that Emery has aided so well in his development. I like that Rogers attempts a different way to play to what is deemed a normal approach. For the sake of my nerves I just wish he didn’t do that on our 18 yard box.

Depending how far England go and assuming they make it to the semifinals I think his club football would start mid September at the earliest.

Maybe, but one thing we haven't been brilliant at is recruitment (Rogers excepted)

I think last summer was underwhelming in the extreme, but we were severely hamstrung after the final day debacle.  However, I would say that generally speaking, our transfer business since we came back into the Premier League has been well above average.  Certainly a far cry from the few years before we got relegated.

I was chatting to a West Ham fan (before they got relegated) about how much money they'd wasted, and he was bemoaning why his club couldn't find and pick rough-diamond bargains like Rogers and Duran.

We've had bad buys, all clubs have, but I would say that we perform at an above-average level in terms of the transfer business we do.  None of our top 10 most expensive players have been what you'd call a 'flop' - though they haven't all been 'successes' either.   It's a far cry from the time we were paying top dollar to buy players on their last contract with no resale value who seemed to get worse the moment we signed them.

Torres, Maatsen, Onana, Tielemans, Bizot, Lindelof, Barkley, all made significant contributions to our season.

This has been done to death, but Maatsen was huge money and whilst he's contributed, he's hardly been great business.

We paid far too much for Onana too.  He may become excellent in time, but he hasn't really lived up to our record signing price tag.

Obviously Tielemans, Pau and Rogers are our stars and some of the squad players were very good business.  But the counterpoints are Malen (who I liked), Guessand, Sancho, Moreno, Barrenchea, Garcia.  The jury is out on Abraham. Philogene was a flip, but we still couldn't make him work.

I think the fact that against Liverpool we started with 7 of the same players who started the 7-2 5.5 years ago is telling (Barkley's second spell of course).

I'm not trying to be too negative, Emery has worked miracles.  But I still think it's reasonable to question our transfer business.

Maatsen and Onana, there was funny business with Chelsea and Everton that summer so true price may be masked a bit. At this stage though both should be firmly in our starting X1 and that's not the case. Maatsen should definitely be ahead of Digne, 33 this summer, and looked to be the case midway during the season but certainly wasn't by the end. Onana, his form is mixed at best when he is fit, which simply isn't often enough.

The rest are a mixed bag as with most clubs, spectacular successes (Rogers, Tielemans, Torres), solid (Bizot, Lindelof), duds (Sancho, Elliot, Guessand, Garcia).

Although you clearly hate Onana, he absolutely is a first choice starter.
