Paul Madeley was the first I heard referred to as a "utility player".

When were "utility rooms" in the home invented? The burgeoning British middle-classes under Thatcher?

Very relaxed on the ball and a good passer.  A bit of an unsung hero type about him as he's so unflustered. Good player and I am pleased he didn't go out on loan.

Excellent tonight. Physical challenge in the second half that he coped well with. He’s definitely a central player, but he’s developing really well.

My MOTM for us tonight

Agreed, did well and snuffed out the little danger Cardiff posed.

Me too. It's a shame he's not a more physically imposing figure, he'd be perfect alongside Torres if he were 6'4".

The way we've integrated him feels a lot like how teams above us in the food chain bring their youth through.

Occasionally filling for injury, turning into filling in on merit and suddenly then just being a normal part of the first team squad furniture.

For most of the last thirty years it's been chuck them straight in the first team and see which ones sink and which ones swim, then either build all our hopes around them or bin them straight out.

It's been a great last few months for him.

The one positive you can take from our barrage of injuries is it has pushed him into the spotlight and I suspect he’ll now stay there.

Very fitting Dinas started this thread as well when they were taking him on-loan last year.
