I do. As there's minimal margin for error with the quality in the top 5 or 6. If we're not putting to bed bottom 5 filth like Forest, lumbering against Wolves, then we have a problem.

By the same token then if we win games vs teams we are not expected to, doesn’t that have reverse but positive impact on our final position?

It will, but hasn’t happened yet.

Nobody expected us to lose 5-1 at Newcastle but we did. Nobody expected us to win 6-1 vs Brighton. Nobody thought we would win 12 straight at home but we have. There are going to be things that are unexpected that happen. Today was unexpected. Those unexpected things will happen to other sides too. Not just us.

Ignoring the scoreline, a loss away at Newcastle and a home win v Brighton are pretty much as expected. Today wasn't really that unexpected though, we mostly haven't been playing very well away from home. Emery recognises this, and said so before and after today's match.

Cash has been brilliant for us but, I can see us looking for an upgrade in Jan. With Moreno back after the next international break, we need that on the right.

I'm a big fan of Cash, but he was atrocious today.

Haven't read the thread as Im too lazy. Very disappointing result and you would say typical Villa, an opportunity to push on to the top table and we bottle it.

But..

They were superb, incredibly competitive and organised and won loads of the 50/50s, yet were clearly second best all game, we weren't on it but were utterly dominant, missed some sitters, final ball was uniformly crap and our best players were miles off the pace. Yet we were still by far the best side.

Pissed off but much to be confident about

On a tactical note, I thought Forest were clever in not employing a forward press until our defenders reached the half way line.

This really compressed the midfield and gave little room for Diaby, Zaniolo etc to weave their magic.

We were outthought and outfought today.

My thoughts exactly. Forest were set up in a way that made life very difficult  for us.

Was he injured? the sky commentator mentioned a shoulder problem. Might be a factor. But it’s also true a 37yr old Ashley Young kept him on the bench parts of last season.

And the best keeper in the world is beaten from 25 yards. Twice.

Shit happens sometimes.

The shoulder injury happened not long before he went off.

Ugh.

One of those where teams around you drop points and you go 'phew', only to think 'fuck, imagine if we'd won'.

Credit to Forest, they got their dream start and did exactly what they should've. For us, yeah, Zaniolo, Bailey, they didn't play well, but the crucial thing was that Martinez did a rick, Konsa was shaky, and Luiz and Kamara were clumsy.

It's totally normal for good teams to have bad days. It's also normal for a team to overperform and find out later. We'll find out which it is later.

In the critical moments the quality just wasn’t there today. Zaniola in particular. I don’t think we were that bad and I was impressed that even after we conceded we kept trying to play football the way Emery wants and with control. That’s how we’ve got to continue. The better players we bring in the more controlled and clinical we’ll be. It was just an off day.

On Zaniola, I’m going to say now that I don’t think it’s going to work for him here and I’m not sure he’s really capable of cutting it in the premier league. Was also disappointed that he decided to stop tracking his man who scored Forest’s first goal.

Nearly every team has ropey days. Clearly the away form needs work, but I always thought this would be tough if we weren’t at it. Last season Citeh and Arsenal didn’t win at Forest, they’ve not been great this year but that was close to the best team and it was always going to be tough.

We need to learn, but I wouldn’t read too much into it. Emery is more than capable of working it out.

Zaniolo disappointed today, but there's some singling him out when to be honest I thought Bailey and Diaby were much worse. Diaby had a horrible game.

Yeah, thought both Duggie and Zaniola didnt put nearly enough effort into closing the space to block the shot
