There was a Villa player behind the goal line hidden by the goal.

But if he's off the pitch then he is disregarded isn' he? Or did that change when I wasn't looking?

No, he's assumed to be level with the perimeter if the pitch.

Otherwise you'd just have players running behind the goal to play people offside.

If that were true why did they take so long looking at it and draw a line from Pedro's back foot?
