Filip Marschall (GK) - sold to Stevenage
« on: July 24, 2023, 01:40:11 PM »
Filip Marschall 20 year old Polish heritage keeper.
Played England Under-18s and under-19s side. Qualifies also for Poland.
Had two loan spells at Gateshead and is in the squad for the summer series.

Barry Kettlewell, the scout who first spotted future England international Darren Bent, and more recently recommended fellow striker Keinan Davis to Villa, heard about this novice goalkeeper who had made a big impression and wanted to see more.

He remembers attending a game where Marschall played outfield in the first half and then went in goal for the second.

“What I noticed was how strong he was at catching the ball from a corner,” Kettlewell, who would go on to suggest Marschall to Villa, says.
“He also had brilliant feet. He could ping it left and right. Yes, he needed some work and guidance, but he clearly had something. I said to his parents that he needed to start playing full games in goal if he was to progress.”

It was at that point when father, Kris, and mother, Gosia, decided to see whether their son could step up at this new position.
Marschall proved a quick learner. He worked out how to protect his body and to position himself better. His handling was boosted by the hand-to-eye co-ordination he believes he inherited from his parents — his dad played volleyball to a high standard, while his mother was a talented basketball player.

In 2018, when Villa were searching for goalkeepers around the age of 15, they were alerted to Marschall, on the back of his performances for Cambridge City . He was signed and Marschall was part of Villa’s FA Youth Cup-winning team.

Good pedigree and attributes for a ball playing Goal Keeper.
Think he would be way better than Olsen at distribution of the ball as been an outfield player.

Ironically, he coughed up the winner for Chesterfield last season by dropping the ball from a corner!

Good 'keeper, though.

Hi, hello everyone, just joined this forum so be gentle.

I met Barry Kettlewell in my local Tescos in Newmarket (Suffolk) early this year. Lovely guy rated Filip very highly.

We chatted for ages all things Villa while my wife went round Tescos, she filled the trolley with shopping and Barry and I were still chatting when she returned.....result!

I am still in contact with Barry as he lives local to me. He did say that there was a very good reason why Mellberg was at the last game of the season, he just said "watch this space...."

All the best

Derek

According to Ian Taylor, Mellberg was there because Taylor suggested it to the club and invited him. Is there more to it than that?

He's a bit old to change positions but I'd give anyone a go over Olsen.

Weren't we looking to sign his Son as a youth player but he went somewhere else?  That story rings a bell.

Not sure if we were linked but it's true his son is a very promising talent. Time will tell. He's now with Salzburg but lots of young Swedish football players leaving at that early age don't make it.

We were in for Olly's son and they decided that Salzburg would be better for his development right now.

I started a specific thread in July hoping he would be given cup opportunities or something this season.
As I say he has a good pedigree and attributes for a ball playing Goal Keeper.
Hope he marshalls the goal well this evening!
Looking forward to seeing him in action for the first team . Well deserved.

Go  Fillip!

Played well. Don't think he could've done anything for their goal. I'd put him above Olsen.

He’s not remotely close to being better than Olsen. He’s a young kid making his way in the game.

Well I vote for him to be FA Cup goalkeeper.
I think he can learn a lot from Martínez and has a bright future.
A potential for Polish number one or England number one one day.

The composure of Olsen, the timewasting ability of Emi.

Didn't really have to do much, and probably couldn't do much for the goal if it deflected, but got VERY lucky with that rebound off Chambers.

I'd put Stevie Wonder above Olsen
