Pongo And Erling
« on: May 01, 2023, 05:18:23 PM »
...are now goalscoring bedfellows. Edit:  After Dixie Dean, the only top-flight players to reach 50 goals in one campaign, Pongo having first achieved it for the Villa in 1930/31.

Of course, Haaland is some type of AI-robot built at NASA's Norwegian base. Pongo was but a humble chap from Birkenhead (like future Villa legends) and he did it on crap pitches, in itchy football shirts and no jobsworths at Stockley Park to award him more penalties/question whether he was offside or not.

Sadly, the Man City chap will likely smash Pongo's record in the last month of the season.

I'm just surprised that this record is not something that is mentioned more by Villa fans. I didn't realise or had forgotten that our Mr Waring held such a record for the Villa until Jonathan Pearce mentioned it on commentary on MOTD last night - who knew there was more to us than '82... ::)

Cue the Peter Morris story:
Quote
"Every time you come here it must bring back memories Pongo," I said. He stared out for a long while. I thought he'd forgotten I was there. "Aye", he said suddenly "aye, they're a great club...the greatest."  I stood and looked with him, this old man whose goals had set the Villa crowds roaring so long ago. It was not quite dusk on that March afternoon and I saw them too...

Dixie Dean’s got the record with 60.

Pongo’s 49 came in the league - plus one in the cup to make 50. Hopefully the new guy won’t get Pongo’s record in the league.

Ah ok, if DD has the overall record, that makes sense. Presumably he scored more than 49 league goals? Even Haaland will do well to get to that in this or any season.

It would really sum up Everton's currently plight if, as well as them going down, Harland broke Dixie Dean's goals record for a season.

Didn't Dixie Dean and Pongo Waring both start out at Tranmere Rovers?

This has been brought to my attention and I've said that Pongo would have got 70 if they had European football then.

Yeah, spoke to an Evertonian mate about this quite often, but Tranmere only just missed out on having a Waring-Dean front line - they were only about a season apart. Can't find the source right now, but sure I read somewhere that Pongo had played school football or something like that against Dixie Dean.

60 in the league alone. A few more in the cup and internationals I think.

The first rule of being a successful athlete: choose your parents carefully :-) Father a footballer in the top division in the UK, mother a Norwegian hepthalon national champion. AFAIK he still holds the world record for longest standing still jump for five-year olds. (Also, his grandmother apparently still holds the regional record for a 60 meters run for 11-year olds, set back in 1964). Three of his cousins play professional football in Norway.

(Forgot to mention the distance)

IIRC Dixie Dean had 60 league goals and 3 FA cup goals in his best season. 63 goals. I cannot imagine anyone breaking that anytime soon.

Quite possible as they were born three and a half months apart. Waring was born 12th October 1906 and Dean on 22nd January 1907 according to  Wikipedia.

Dixie Dean 60 goals in 39 league games in 1927/28 is the English record.
The British record is Jimmy Smith for Ayr United, 66 goals in 38 games in the same season.

I was listening to a podcast and they mentioned how Dixie Dean had to have a bollock removed after a nasty challenge for Tranmere when he was 17. Then 17 years later in a pub in Chester a man brought him a pint and he recognised it was the one who caused him to lose a bollock so he went over and battered him. Haven't looked this up but it's quite funny to retaliate 17 years later if it is.

Bit over the top, though. He could've just given him a good bollocking.

Reminded me of a 12-year delayed Mafia revenge murder for a punch in the face back in the sixties/seventies.
