The other dynamic at play in a one club town is simply a mentality of not having a choice about who you support. Once you have a choice about who you support within your own city or town, the choice to support a team from somewhere else becomes more of a possibility. In a one club town, even people with no interest in football support that club.

A friend of mine told me recently that Catania and Palermo are around the top-ten for most supported clubs in Italy for similar reasons. Catania are in Serie *D* but they still show up.

How are Cesc and Dennis Wise getting on at Como?

You really need to go to Newcastle to understand how the club is the club 'of the city'.

The ground is right in the centre of town, high up, and unavoidable. It 'imposes' itself on the city in a way that I think far exceeds, say, Leeds United, which is another club in a one club city.

Absolutely right.

There's also the fact that Newcastle really is very remote. Other than Sunderland, there's no other big town anywhere near. There's nothing but villages west until you get to Carlisle, and nothing north until you get to Edinburgh. Even south you've only got Middlesbrough between Newcastle and the built up West Yorkshire conurbation. The fact that the ground is right in the city centre plays a big part as well as you say. It's probably my favourite away game, as it's a superb ground 5 minutes from the city centre and it's therefore a piece of piss to enjoy yourself there both before and after the game.

What's the metro system like? I've never been there but apparently there's a stag do on the horizon, the groom's a tee-totaller so not sure what the planning committe was at.

Newcastle and Sunderland both benefit from having the ground right in the city, Sunderland is maybe slightly further being on the other side of the river but both are very accessible.

Makems I’ve met remind me of Brummies. Generally smart modest down to earth people, weary with being overlooked and taken for granted. By comparison Geordies are like south Lancs types, good at blowing their own trumpet and making people think minor achievements are somehow significant.

Yes Sunderland's very near, but as you say you have to cross the bridge to get to it. With Newcastle, 100m down the hill and you're basically at the edge of the recognisable town centre. Sunderland's probably the same sort of distance into the town centre as the Dingles' ground is to theirs.

Some utterly bizarre views of the game here. A lot of the posts are just gibberish. Why do they hate us so much, all because of us giggling along with the rest of the country when they went down?

They're a nothing team to me.

Only just had a nose at this on my lunch break, the bloke in the old photo above the banner that they're taking the piss out of is my neighbour, he's bloody sound as well. Arseholes!

That away end is fcuking shit though.  Parking is a bit of a shitter as well if you drive.  I parked in Eldon Square I think last time I was there.

Longstaff was missing… Yeah that’s it lads.

Reminds of the time Xavi and Iniesta only bossed a champions league final, because Darren Fletcher was missing.

There was a post on their forum before the game about how great is was that they'd got the three they had starting playing together at last, and how they were going to dominate us.

Lol.

Kamara was missing for Villa, but we had to play Dendonker and he had no problems coping, even with a blindfold on

Just had a quick read, most of them seem ok tbf.  Similar banter re match thread starters as we have on here, quite a lot of acknowledgement that we were the better team, the odd bombast shouting about us being shit.  All looks very familiar.

I spent four years there and tbh found them absolutely sound (although my best mate was a mackem, and they were all sound too).

This was as a student so going out on the town most nights, didn't see a hint of trouble ever, not like when I'd come home and go out in Brum.

We take the piss out of them but the vast majority of their fans are sound, but like us, they have a knobbish element - I see this fake rivalry on social media and the people winding each other up from both sides seem like absolute twats to me.

Lots of references to Brum and brummies being boring or beige, because yeah, the carnival spirit evoked by the likes of Chris Rea and Dire Straits is celebrated the world over.

TBH I don't think it's comparable, Newcastle is way more central and imposing.

When they score, you hear the noise all over the city centre.

Sunderland is accessible from the city centre. Newcastle is right in the city centre.

Also - Sunderland city centre is a desolate waste land, Newcastle is a great city with plenty of great places to eat and drink.

I don't know if they do this any more but Newcastle used to have a deal with the local transport authority that match ticket holders got free transport to and from the game on the local network, metro and bus
