Once you have a choice about who you support within your own city or town, the choice to support a team from somewhere else becomes more of a possibility. In a one club town, even people with no interest in football support that club.A friend of mine told me recently that Catania and Palermo are around the top-ten for most supported clubs in Italy for similar reasons. Catania are in Serie *D* but they still show up.

You really need to go to Newcastle to understand how the club is the club 'of the city'. The ground is right in the centre of town, high up, and unavoidable. It 'imposes' itself on the city in a way that I think far exceeds, say, Leeds United, which is another club in a one club city.

Other than Sunderland, there's no other big town anywhere near. There's nothing but villages west until you get to Carlisle, and nothing north until you get to Edinburgh. Even south you've only got Middlesbrough between Newcastle and the built up West Yorkshire conurbation. The fact that the ground is right in the city centre plays a big part as well as you say. It's probably my favourite away game, as it's a superb ground 5 minutes from the city centre and it's therefore a piece of piss to enjoy yourself there both before and after the game.
Newcastle and Sunderland both benefit from having the ground right in the city, Sunderland is maybe slightly further being on the other side of the river but both are very accessible.

A lot of the posts are just gibberish. Why do they hate us so much, all because of us giggling along with the rest of the country when they went down? They're a nothing team to me.
Longstaff was missing… Yeah that’s it lads.Reminds of the time Xavi and Iniesta only bossed a champions league final, because Darren Fletcher was missing.

Only just had a nose at this on my lunch break, the bloke in the old photo above the banner that they're taking the piss out of is my neighbour, he's bloody sound as well. Arseholes!
Makems I’ve met remind me of Brummies. Generally smart modest down to earth people, weary with being overlooked and taken for granted. By comparison Geordies are like south Lancs types, good at blowing their own trumpet and making people think minor achievements are somehow significant.

Arseholes!Just had a quick read, most of them seem ok tbf. Similar banter re match thread starters as we have on here, quite a lot of acknowledgement that we were the better team, the odd bombast shouting about us being shit. All looks very familiar.
