There's a report in a Spanish paper today that we were willing to pay €50million for Nico Williams (his release fee), and pay him €7million a year, but he turned us down. (I believe he turned other clubs down too, but interesting to see what we were willing to offer for the right players)

Sounds about right and I suspect we went from him to Diaby, I'd be amazed if the plan was to get both.

I was thinking the same. It was pretty early in the window we were linked with Williams, and it died away again pretty immediately, so I'd assume he gave a clear and definite no, and we moved on to other targets.

Had to go back a page to make sure these weren't three year old posts.

Bring back El Ghazi, have people had a collective mental breakdown? Christ almighty, who next, Carles Gil?

😂

Supposed to have signed Freddie Lawrie (schoolboy midfielder) off Port Vale.

For a record breaking fee no less.

A record by what measure?

He has a great name but then again so did Dan Crowley and look what happened to him...

Was he the biggest let down in terms of unfulfilled potential down the years? I remember loads of talk about Stephen? Cooke back in the day but didn't happen for him

Cooke wasn't big enough; Crawley by all accounts had the wrong attitude even when Arsenal loaned him out to Barnsley.

Think it's a record in the sense that it's the most Port Vale have ever received for a schoolboy.

Thank you.

The youth system is definitely in the positive after the last few years so it’s great that we are splurging the cash on the next generation.

And so it continues…

Biggest let down for me in terms of unfulfilled potential out of any academy player was Nathan Delfouneso.

He had everything to his game. Height, strength, pace, touch, skill, finishing ability, etc, etc.

Its just a shame that he developed a "Billy Big Bollocks" attitude early on.

A mate of mine knew him & 'his entourage'.

He despised him due to his attitude.

Good shout. Took me a lot longer than it should have done to accept that he wasn't going to become the next Didier Drogba.

Now not scoring for AFC Fylde in the National League.

The people around young players have such a big role to play in their development.
