I've seen Newcastle and Utd linked with him too.
Who are Utd?

Sheffield I always say as they are the first but I could be wrong about that. Unless the poster accidentally added "and" in between Newcastle Utd.

Genuinely can't tell if this is serious or not.

It's serious, you'll get pulled up on here fo not specifying, it's been that way for ever

I assumed context would have made it obvious and removed any need for clarification. I'll keep it in mind next time.

Never underestimate just how nit-picky this place can be.

You can't just say Utd.  No club has the right to that title.  Do you mean Leeds, Sheffield, Newcastle, West Ham, Carlisle, Cambridge, Oxford?  Maybe Southend?

Yes, I meant Carlisle United were in the running to sign João Félix, and they are a much more likely destination for him than us.

No worries its just a bugbear of mine. I particularly hate it in commentary when united is mentioned if its Man united vs say Newcastle.

I wouldn't say it's nit-picky.  It's more about not giving 'them' that sort of reverence.  Their shit stinks too.

I pull up people saying United because it plays into the arrogant mindset of their fans that there “is only one”.

To be fair it's quite close to Dumfries. He might be a big fan of  Rabbie Burns or Beatrix Potter. Or both, they've both written stuff about animals after all. You just don't know.

They don't like to be referred to as 'ManU'.  That's what they should be called.

I'd wager a whole lot of money that plenty of us would refer to us as United from time to time if we'd have been named so

It's fine for their fans to refer to themselves as "United", nobody will have a problem with that.

It is when non Man United fans do it, that's a totally different issue.

Well yes, we refer to ourselves as Villa.

In Sheffield, when people say United they mean Sheffield, generally. ManU fans don't like it, especially when they are pulled up on it. I know ManCity fans too, and they say City, so I ask why they are talking about Leicester.

We're so very lucky to be unique like that.

There was a TV interview when Sheffield U played ManU, and the interviewer, when speaking to a SheffU player, referred to United. The idiot then responded, accepting the ManU name tag. I was appalled.
