If being in a relegated team is a reason not to sign a player, you might want to stay clear of the OS today ;-)

Though there are those (and some on here) who would have us buy the nucleus of that relegated team, ie Tielemans, Maddison and Barnes. One's enough for me.

I would have liked Harvey barnes - big upgrade on Bailey imo
Don't agree. Whilst Bailey is inconsistent he played in a team who needed to win most of their matches and played his part is doing that. Barnes played his part in relegating a team. A mostly ineffective player.

Nah, Barnes is a good player.

I would like a bid put in for Rihad Mahrez. Another big upgrade on Bailey.

Man City are letting some of their older players go. He is a class act, underused and still has a couple of good years in him.

I am never a fan of taking players from the so called 'big six'. They never seem to perform like they did at the club they leave. A sort of a step down and they seem to have if you like, a ''you are lucky to have me'' attitude. (obviously discounting the likes of God, Saunders, and Staunton amongst a few others).
We have had our fair share over the years with the likes of Ireland, Collymore, Lescott, etc.

They rarely seldom work out for the buying team. A few examples below.

Man City - Sterling, De Jesus, Zinchenko. All three of them mainly coming off the bench for their new clubs.
Man Utd - Pereira, Pogba, Bailly, Lingard

Chelsea - Koulibaly, Mendy.
Arsenal - Pepe,
Liverpool - Naby Keita, Mane,Minamino, Origi
Spurs - Moura, Ndombele

I would like to think that gone are the days when we are happy to sign another teams cast offs and we are looked upon as one last pay day.

I thought that at times last season too until the back end of the season. He’s very good going forward but when you watch hime closely his defensive duties are not what Emery would want and I think that’s the reason we haven’t looked further.

Although a cursory scan of that list would lead me to argue that Jesus and Zinchenko were pretty key in Arsenal getting an unexpected runners up spot and the Chelsea players listed haven’t played for their new clubs yet.

I wouldn't have minded Azpilicueta for a couple of seasons. He's off to Madrid apparently though.

Pereira was also one of Fulham's best players last season. And while Koulibaly, Mendy, Moura and Keita might well appear on a list like this in the future, it feels a bit harsh to say that haven't been successes at their new clubs before they've even started there.

I like Barnes, ever since his loan at West Brom in the championship. Its a debatable  point but Leicester called him back after xmas that season and Albions form dipped accordingly, the football Gods aligned with our form going the other way.
I’d like him at Villa, but I won’t be devastated if we don’t, i think Unai and Monchi will have their sights set on Spain and Portugal.
Just on Barnes being ineffective, he scored 13 goals from the wing last season and probably has similar figures for other seasons, so i suppose it depends on your definition of ineffective for a winger.

His legs have completely gone.

Indeed, I’d hate to have an ineffective winger who only scored 13 goals last season and Bailey is hardly known for his defensive work. I know it’s in vogue to have your forward players help out defensively but first and foremost they need to deliver going forward and Barnes certainly does that. For the rumoured price I think he’s great value.

Yeah think it depends on the attitude of the players really.  Jesus and Zinchenko obviously relished the chance of regular football at a club they were happy to join.

What you really don’t want is a half-arsed player who sees joining your club as a massive step down and just dials it in.

I don’t believe Emery would ever contemplate signing that sort of player. Anyone who joins will know that it’s about the team first and foremost and if they do not buy into that then they’re not going to play.

Would certainly be interested in Mahrez if he's available

Great player. As others have said would he be hungry to be the main man and play each week or would he see villa as part of his retirement plan?

I also think older players may be less inclined to buy into Emery’s long lectures. So that should also be a consideration,

If he leaves there this summer it will be for the mega riches of the Executioners League
