With the way the club is evolving under new owners / manager it would not surprise me if within the next 2 seasons that only 1 or 2 of our current regular 1st eleven are still regular starters.

For me those 2 players would be Martinez and Kamara.

Who are these eight or nine players out there that we're buying over the next couple of years? I think it's far more likely that we're fending off bids for the likes of Luiz, Moreno, Ramsey et al over that time than us trying to upgrade them.
Agree. Its fanciful to think that we have the FFP capacity to spend that much and that many players need upgrading.
Evolution not revolution.

Definitely, Emery evolves, he doesn't revolve.

The Torres chatter does seem to be increasing. I'm happy to let Unai work out how best to play him and Mings.

More good news is that the AOC links have died away (not that they were particularly credible anyway).

If Torres does come in then I'd fear for Diego Carlos future with us. The handful of times I've seen Pau Torres play for club and country I haven't been all that impressed.

My uninformed guess is that there are concerns about Carlos coming back at the level he was, which leaves us with only two centre backs.

Incremental change, not complete overhaul.

Yep, changing too many at once can do more harm than good.

Also, i wouldn't be too upset with us starting the season with Martinez,Cash,Moreno,Mings,Konsa,Luiz,McGinn,Kamara,Ramsey,New player, Watkins, so that's only one to go in immediately. If we can sign a CB and RB to really put the pressure on Konsa/Carlos and Cash and another quality attacking player to come in for one of the midfielders if we need to more attacking plus a very competent sub GK then i think we'd be in great shape.

Absolutely, he’s been wrapped in cotton wool
Since “getting fit”. Fingers crossed I’m wrong, but he may not get back to his best. I imagine we will see in the preseason games

Yes, that's been a concern for me since he didn't get many minutes at the end of the season. However given we were fighting for Europe, winning games was the priority rather than giving game time so hopefully he'll be fine. May also depend on how much Monchi rates him given he sold him to us whilst at Sevilla.

I imagine psychologically it might be tough getting past an injury like that.

Not just fanciful but also ludicrous.  We might get a number of additions to strengthen the squad in that time but certainly not the team wholesale as Sid1964 alludes to. We have our better players and our improving players who are improving because of the coaching and the system.  Anyone new coming in will need to be coached and will need to adapt just as Grealish has had to adapt to Man City's system by playing worse than when with us.

I just had a look, because I remember reading about achilles ruptures recurring.

https://www.sportsmedreview.com/blog/return-to-play-following-achilles-tendon-rupture/

  • 80% of elite athletes return from a rupture.
  • In the NFL, NBA, and MLB they all had reduced playing time for one to two years after the injury. (No mention of proper footie).
  • There's an 8% chance of re-rupture over the next 2 years after surgery in professional soccer player.

There's another study looking at only football players between 2008 and 2018;

https://bjsm.bmj.com/content/54/8/480

  • Backs up the 8% recurrence.
  • 18% did not return to play at their previous level in the two years after surgery.
  • players over the age of 30 had higher odds of re-rupture and not returning to play at the previous level.

So it does look sensible to cover ourselves really. He may not get back to his level, he may not be able to play week in week out, and he may have a recurrence.

According to reports here we've been sniffing around Benfica's Norway international, Fredrik Aursnes. Benfica aren't interested in selling him which is a shame as he has the prefect profile for the PL.

We wouldn't play him every week though, it would be Aursnes for courses
