Apologies if it’s been posted but an extract from the DT

Aston Villa

What they need: Striker, winger(s), centre-back, right-back.
Notable players linked: Pau Torres, Brennan Johnson, Harvey Barnes, Tyler Adams.
What we are hearing: Unai Emery’s primary focus is on wingers, with up to two new signings in that position, while the La Liga market is also going to be exploited by Villa and Monchi, their new president of football operations. (John Percy)

My lad knows more about other European leagues than me and tells me, despite really liking Mings, Torres is better, I don’t want Mings replaced and don’t see us spending 30 million +, for a player to play 15-20 games, but I’d be excited if we signed him. In terms of the other gossip, I’d be blown away if we got Chiesa, genuinely excited by Gonclavez, pretty excited by what Barnes could do and a little under whelmed by Sancho.
Just want it to get going now.

There’s a football journalist called Sam Tighe, who I’ve heard on a few podcasts by virtue of him being a Villa fan. Seems really knowledgable on European football and he reckons there’s no way Torres would be an adequate replacement for Mings as he’s physically weak and no good in the air.

I'm not too panicky at this stage as I don't think we would be too shabby if we started the season with the same squad we had for the last one.  We are obviously going to add some players and have the time to ensure we get the players we want.

Thats interesting Percy. Will be interesting to see what happens if we do sign him and how much, money being quoted seems a lot for a back up?  But then like others have posted its about the squad now.

The bloke on For The Love of Paul McGrath agrees with Sam Tighe about Torres’ strengths and weaknesses, and concludes he’d have to play with Mings, even though that would be two lefties.

With the way the club is evolving under new owners / manager it would not surprise me if within the next 2 seasons that only 1 or 2 of our current regular 1st eleven are still regular starters.

For me those 2 players would be Martinez and Kamara.

I'd add JJ to that. He is going to get better and better.

Who are these eight or nine players out there that we're buying over the next couple of years? I think it's far more likely that we're fending off bids for the likes of Luiz, Moreno, Ramsey et al over that time than us trying to upgrade them.

The Torres chatter does seem to be increasing. I'm happy to let Unai work out how best to play him and Mings.

More good news is that the AOC links have died away (not that they were particularly credible anyway).

I also don't think that we will see massive changes in the near future.  We have a pretty settled side that lost very few games under the manager last season and hopefully will improve again next season.

There are some key areas that need quality players, but I don't think a major overhaul is required.

Incremental change, not complete overhaul.

Last season was great but we were just playing league games. With 3 cups to compete for we need strength in depth across the board and in particular a decent reserve keeper and centre forward.
