I knew it. Five minutes ago it was 'we don't have the squad to compete on all fronts', now it's 'how would we keep these players happy??'. Like clockwork.

The top of modern football is a squad game and everyone understands this.
Of course.  But we're not in the Champions League and the reality is I don't think Konsa and Mings, for instance, will be prepared to stay and be bit part players for Aston Villa, however much you think they should because it's the modern way.

Really hope Diego Carlos isn't finished.

Seeing that video of Tielemans , it just struck me again how wonderful it is that Leicester were relegated.

For me, it's a no.

Emery would sort him out, though. So ok, sign him up.

Didn't Carlos come back from his injury, feature in a match, and then not even show on the bench for the last couple of games?

I may have imagined that bench bit.

How do other top clubs manage it?
By going deep into the Champions League and cups for a start.

And outside of Man City & Chelsea, how many other clubs do actually manage it?

Next stop: Yeah, but which players should we go for who would actually want to join us?

Christ, you're both acting like I said we should be happy if we can get Troy Deeney.  What part of doubting we can keep 4 top centre backs happy right for the reasons I gave justifies this hyperbole?

I didn't even see your original post, was just replying in the context of what Monty said.

It's like that all the time here.

See also: I hope we don't get into Europe this year in case it impacts our ability to get into Europe next year - that's a fresh one this season.

And of course, the great managerial question - "Who is our there who we could get who would do a better job? NAME THEM!"

Yeah sorry Chris, didn't want to single you out! Just a thing I think we've got to get used to: thinking differently about the squad. Even the last time we had some relative success we were the most resolutely old-school first-eleven-and-stand-ins side in the league. We've never really had a top class squad as the modern game understands it, and Pau Torres on the bench is just one of those things.

For the first time ever, I feel completely confident in saying, without fear of challenge:

Absolutely fucking nobody.

Basically. Based on not much more than this I think he's essentially fucked, and won't be back properly.

I definitely agree we need to be ambitious and build a squad and I've said similar stuff myself before - particularly in relation to forwards.  I do think it's harder to give defenders game time but even so I'd be happy if we signed Torres and see how things shake out.  But equally, I wouldn't be too anxious if we start next season with Mings, Konsa and a fit Carlos and spent our money elsewhere.  That's partly because I have an extremely high opinion of Mings though.

If we're going to just bumble around mid table forever then a decent back up keeper and 1 new forward to replace Ings in the squad should be enough. If we're going to give it our best shot at top 6 next season and actually trying to win the 3 cups we're in, we need to do more;
The 2 mentioned plus a center back, center mid and a creative attacking player. Plus a right back if we're not keeping Young. And maybe a young 3rd keeper if the ones we have aren't up to it.

Looking at the big picture at center back, Mings has been immense for 6 months or so and should keep his place as it stands, but was always error prone before. Konsa has been a lot better for the last 6 months but was first on the list for replacement in the whole team before that. Carlos has played 2 games in the PL and then had a year long injury and Chambers after a decent start for us did not look convincing there last season, if anything looked a bit better in midfield. So yes, if we're serious we should buy another, and as pointed out someone who is excellent at playing the ball out.

Diego had a run-about at Wolves briefly but didn't feature again and wasn't even on the bench the last game or two.

Missing a year of football at his age is really tough, so I'm hoping for the best and expecting the worst.
