We were discussing this on the train home. Last win we could recall was Burnley away 3 years ago

Before today we'd apparently won once in the last 15 games we wore our third kit. And that win was Burnley.

We wore the green / red combo 3rd kit when we played Arsenal off the park with the 3-0 Grealish show  as well

The worry is despite owning the ball, and utterly dominating midfield, we really struggled to create genuine chances against the worst team in the league. Moreno, Ramsey, Buendia, Bailey weren't at it, while Coutinho had little impact when he came on either. Nothing wrong with a goal from an old fashioned set piece, mind. Been a while since we scored from one it seems.

I dont think we created loads against Leeds or Wolves either. We’re finding a way to win which is a great habit and has to be related to the way Emery has us set and players drilled. I suppose the concern will be can it last, if Bailey, Beundia and Watkins continue to be a bit hit and miss. Another couple attacking minded players through the door in the next week hopefully, will help with that. 3 points off sixth, feels a good place to be though .

If we're getting results without creating a lot and playing too well then it's encouraging. It'll get better.

We look much more solid, which was a problem under the Scouse Sherwood, but it's clear our attacking options are limited. We need more pace, movement and strength, alongside that creativity.

I thought we were very good in the first half and completely dominated it in a way we haven't done for some time.  Played really good football and really didn't let them play at all. 

Problem we have got is that our attacking players lose possession and give the ball away far too often.  It happens pretty much every game as well.  If we are going to move forward, we simply need better quality in those areas.

Moving away from that horrible 433 has certainly made us stronger without the ball. Both Kamara and Luiz are much more comfortable in a 2. Young wisely stays behind the ball a lot more, so we nearly always have at least 4 behind the ball at all times. Under Gerrard our CBs were often the only two behind the ball with likes of McGinn trundling back on the cover.

I'm not a fan of this tactical set up under Emery with the ball. It's not really a 442 or 4222 with Bailey with kind of a free role high on the right. As we saw v Wolves particularly it leaves us vulnerable to a 3 v 2 in midfield. I'm not sure why there is a reluctance to switch to 4231 but maybe he doesn't trust Bailey defensively. Either way likes of Ramsey, Bailey and Buendia all need to improve.

I thought the same, in fact if you were to watch MOTD it looked like Southampton were the better team. I guess its difficult with highlights to show the 72% ball possession that we had for the first half.

Good win against a team, who only recently deserved to beat Man City in the EFL Cup, lack of creativity is a concern, but hopefully that is gonna improve under Emery. Biggest disappointment for me was Coutinho, when he came on, couldn't believe how bad he was, he was giving the ball away, almost every time he got the ball.

I actually thought Southampton wasnt that bad, there is worse teams in the league i thought , they had good organisation for defence and their CB s looked good - point is says something about us able to dominate them and also why we didnt score more (than we needed). Most of the time we where really good as a team I thought. Bailey and Watkins probably show their best as counter attacking players and as it where a game that we didnt counterattack - but still got the goal. Watkins still had a good game, we didnt see the best of Buenodias and Bailey - but have to remember they scored our two goals to beat Leeds last week. Buendia cant defend especially when got tiered and so couldnt help Moreno (which I think looks that he has the signs of the quality needed) - Moreno and our left suffered a bit from that. Cash  coudnt find his place or the ball in right midfield when cme on and a tiering Young  had to hold our right most of his own i thought.

So that's 15 games in about 110 we played wearing third kit. There in is the problem, don't wear a kit that players are not used to wearing. No one needs a third kit.

It's the performance you hanker after the most and ultimately what made you purchase the shirt in question.

I think it was a performance like a top side often puts in away from home, where they aren't at their best but dominate possession and control the ball for long periods.

In terms of evolution, this is a significant improvement from a team winning an away game with a counter-attack/set-piece while being battered for most of the game.
