I'm pretty sure if they'd gone all Dave Bassett we'd have been fine.

Coming from a goal behind to win away is very un-Villa. I felt we were much the more dangerous side and you can see the belief starting to resonate in the squad. Sometimes you don't always fix things by declaring players are shit all the time "Bailey is shit, Young is shit"". Mostly you need good management.

A lot of professional footballers have remarkable self belief and resilience. Young had a lot of injury problems at Old Trafford as a wiry winger, he could have played out the last few seasons of his career but instead bulks up and becomes a full back. Wins a league title at Inter and playing very well for us still at 37. To be honest, Southgate really should have picked him as you know he would have been a decent option in either fullback spot.

Bailey's performance at Fulham was a new low. For some that would have devastated whatever confidence you had left but only a few days later he is scoring and creating goals. You read about the early part of his career and all the graft he put into making it was remarkable.

True but there's a big difference between singular and collective belief.

I said that watching the match - at no point did Brighton start thumping long balls into the box to put us under pressure. They just kept on with their same, pretty ineffective, game plan of pass pass pass pass pass - which we coped with easily.

It's served them pretty well this season to be fair. It's important to have a defined style, but it won't always be successful. I thought Brighton looked a decent footballing side, just one without a cutting edge against us.

Yep - they couldn't break us down, no plan B... We've seen more tactical nous of Emery in his first two league games than we saw in 12 months of Slippy and without being harsh 3 years of Smith.

As they said on MOTD, Brighton wouldn't have scored another if they'd played till midnight.

I wasn't particularly nervous watching it, despite the decades worth of injury time. I started to think what I'd be thinking if the roles were reversed, and I'd have been sat there thinking there's no way we're scoring here.

Yeah, I was calmer yesterday with a one goal lead than I was last week when we were two up. That may be because of our histories against the respective clubs, though.

Yes, it is a bit different then same formation, but different players. Or even different formation, I'll stick with it for 90 mins even if not working.

In the three matches under him, we have had different starting formations and players in each, and changes of tactics with changes of personnel when needed.

I expect it could be frustrating for players and fans going forward (Rainieri's nickname for example when he did it) but at least you know the manager is trying to get results instead of sticking with the things that don't work. From the highlights yesterday, it looked like McGinn had the role in midfield he almost plays in Scotland, told to make the runs into the space Ings made as it led to the first goal and a few other chances. I actually thought it was Ings who made the run initially as McGinn was so far forward.

Same here. Mainly because at any second you expect the ref to give the Mancs an absolutely outrageous decision.

I'm in the do whatever it takes to become an established top six team and then make it a little more subtle. The irony about all this is the Leeds manager started this debate when Leeds in fact started all this shithousery 50 years ago. If we can emulate the success they had (albeit with a few more trophies) in the late 60's and early 70's, I couldn't give a toss about all this sniping.

Hey, where’s @Flin5tone?

I don't know but I bet he's "fuming"!

Still no sign of him?

Amazing isn't it? I reckon he's actually some Russian bot , bored as fuck, sat in a warehouse in Lithuania.

Definitely more Vilnian than Villan.

The last 30 mins or so was a defensive master class from Emery, against a Brighton side, who a couple weeks ago put 4 past Chelsea. That day was also one of the most pathetic displays I've seen from a Villa side losing to Newcastle, which shows just how brilliantly Unai has turned us from a side, who has no backbone whatsoever, to a side, who now gives absolutely everything for the boss and fans.

Thought Kamara played well, forming a good partnership with Douglas and McGinn had his best game for a while. Tyrone 2nd half performance was international class, but unfortunately he has too many displays like he did in the first half to make it in the WC squad.

When we're 3-0 up every game, we won't need to shithouse.

Being totally honest, I did think it went a little too far yesterday and we did put ourselves under further pressure with the 8 minutes of added time.  Also picked up some pretty unnecessary bookings in the process.

I'v watched the penalty again claim, and it really is a load of rubbish that it was 'stonewall'. Digne has the ball and is trying to clear it out of defence. He goes to kick the ball, but hits the turf, mainly because March has dived in with what wasn't far off being a scissor tackle. It then hits Digne's standing leg and bounces free. At the very worst, it's a 50/50 coming together.
