I reckon if you earn so much money (is Unai on about £8m a year with us?) that if you then get an offer of, say, £12m a year it is almost inconsequential. What are you gonna do with that extra £4m minus applicable taxes that will improve your standard of live so much that it'll be worth it?

You're already easily able to eat in the best/most expensive restaurants, have the most expensive accessories, the nicest cars, fly business class to anywhere on the planet on your time off. You've probably already got a pile of stocks and shares and cash, probably a load set aside for the kids as well.

Throw in that if to get that extra £4m you have to relinquish certain controls at your new destination, trade decision making and influence, as well as uprooting your nearest and dearest and you know you're already on to a good thing, then is it worth it?

Some folks just can’t have enough cash, I don’t get it. I often wonder why people like Trump for example can have so much wealth and still ‘ by any means necessary, legal or otherwise do anything to obtain more.

Anyway Unai is loved, extremely well paid and isn’t going anywhere.

Unai wants 2 things:
  • to be wanted

  • and control.
He currently has both, and a more than sufficient salary.

He's ok where he is.

If ManU offered him 20m a year there wouldn't be anything other than an Unai shaped dust cloud at Bodymoor. Money isn't his driving factor but it's a factor for everyone.

They won't offer that but it's naive to think Unai only has eyes for us and that will always be the case regardless. Same for every employee of the club.

I reckon the Venn diagram of "we're too Special and Unique for Unai to think about things as shallow as money" and "Grealish is one of us, it's different this time" is probably a circle.

You can add a couple of layers of 'we're not a selling club' and 'he won't want to sit on their bench'.

At the right time he’ll go to Bilbao, it’s the pinnacle for every Basque.

While we're all in a nice cynical safe-space of twisted bitterness, something else to get off my chest:

The fact that we pay more money to agents and intermediaries than nearly anyone else, while also building and retaining a brilliant squad of players for comparatively little money.

Maybe those two things might be interdependent.

Except for boyhood Real Sociedad supporters, like Emery.

Sociedad have a diluted sense of Basque identity.

Had you considered that a lot of Basque people might also have a diluted sense of Basque identity?

There might be a clue in the name of Real Sociedad that indicates that not all Basque football fans - perhaps not even all Basque people - have the same view of their identity.

The Basque derby is one of the friendliest around as they are Basques first and foremost. They get a bit of a grump if the other club nabs a Basque player they wanted but that's about it.
