From Jacob Tanswell

Matty Cash, comes to the mixed zone, beer in hand; “the king set the game-plan out for us. He clearly is because he’s won it five times.”

Unai Emery to TNT on what the future holds at Aston Villa. "I am ambitious and, of course, I need support [from] the owners and everyone that works in the club.

"And from the players, and they are following us. We are doing it together. But we must try to set our ambitions, being clear and realistic. Every step forward we are doing makes sense."

Does this sound like 'back me or I'm gone' to anyone else?

Sounds more like him appreciating that it’s a team effort.

He's being backed as much as Uefa's rules allow us to.

What a night!  Definitely has the feel of an epic “end of phase one” for Unai. A brilliant run from the relegation places, repeated European qualification and now a long-awaited major trophy, getting totally unexpected levels of performance from a squad that was largely there already, around a soon to be legendary core of Martinez, Cash, Konsa, McGinn, Kamara, Buendia, Watkins, Digne etc, with just a few successful additions.

How phase two shakes out depends on how much the owners can/ want to / are allowed to invest. Squad needs a bit of trimming, a bit of depth and a bit of youth.

You know, in the cold light of day (actually it's quite warm but whatever) - considering all the difficulties, considering all the restrictions, considering how low the mood was at the beginning of the season, that the results were somehow worse and the performances, again, somehow even worse, to finish the season top five, possibly top four, qualifying for the CL AND winning the Europa League, double qualifying for the CL, ending a 30 year trophy drought by winning a cup we'd never won before...it's actually kind of mindblowing. Even without the Villa goggles on it's beyond belief.

Especially in this era of Football when nobody is given time, managers (even the really good ones) don’t turn those situations around. Six or seven without a win it’s usually terminal and just a case of when they exit.
