Emery is limited by the lack of quality in a couple of positions and a very average bench. The only question i would have is in my opinion the under use of Lideloft. Every time he has played he has shown his quality, if Onana was to miss then he would be my pick to replace him, at the very least you would get the aggression that was missing against Fulham.

With Lindelof you also get his ability to move forward meaningfully into space when he plays at the back,  and to pass the ball in a forward direction, which is conspicuously absent from Konsa's game, making our play both laborious and predictable.

I don't think he has been though. There was a lot of this talk earlier in the season too in our bad run about why McGinn was on the wing. He has destroyed a serious of opposing full backs by pinning them in field and turning into midfield with the ball. Combines superbly with Cash on that side. Didn't work yesterday obviously.
 
I'd prefer if we stopped trying and failing with wingers in the traditional sense. It worked brilliantly with Bailey for one season but failed with every other one. Bailey mark 2 and Sancho need to be put out of their misery. Try and find the next McGinn or failing that get JJ back.

We really need to stop pining after former players, particularly ones as regularly underwhelming/injured as Ramsey. Plus we'd need to match or improve on the blood money he's on up there. Not going to happen, nor should it.

Newcastle are going to have to gut their squad in the summer. JJ has played nearly 40 games for them already so fitness hasn't been an issue. Playing out of position a lot of the time. 5 years younger than Wilson, wages wise he's the better bet. He was outstanding when Emery first came in with Moreno on the left. Might never hit those heights consistently again but tactically he's the perfect fit for us.

Just going back to the McGinn thing (sorry).

I think one of the underrated benefits of having him fairly wide on the right is the cover it provides for Cash.

Every single time McGinn has been replaced in that position by Bailey or Sancho, Cash starts having a torrid time.

Cash can normally deal with everything thrown at him but recently he's had to face a few fast, tricky wingers, Johnathan Rowe being the first this season to give him a bit of a run around. With Callum Hudson-Odoi out on Thursday, Matty should be able to deal with whatever they have down our right. Support from SJM is an automatic.

With Callum Hudson-Odoi out on Thursday, Matty should be able to deal with whatever they have down our right. Support from SJM is an automatic.
