Well I don’t know what the disconnect is but we need to start buying players the manager will use. I’m not absolving Unai there by the way, he needs to be more flexible if things aren’t exactly as planned.

Yep its frustrating to see other teams new players in the starting line ups immediately and performing and it takes us 6 months to integrate anyone.

It’s not even that - I can handle things taking time. It’s signing players and not using them or shipping them out within 12 months that bothers me.

But everyone keeps saying that Emery is involved in the whole process and has the final say on who we sign. Our signings, on the whole, have been abysmal.

I was going to find a list of all the ins and outs and rate them, but can't be arsed.

I can only think Torres and Dougie are not capable of too much game time.

I think they and Abraham and Barkley aren't at the required fitness levels to start games in quick succession.

The thing that really gets me is that no, we can't spend loads of money on proven players, particularly not in January. But instead of thinking, oh we'll go and get someone who isn't quite there yet but is clearly talented, we either pay over the odds for a short term punt or buy a sixteen year old who we immediately loan out to the French regional leagues. The transfer policy is by far, far the worst thing about the Emery Villa.

Isn’t this just modern football and all clubs are trying it? It’s just other teams at least strengthen their first team as well.

We’ve signed Lindelöf, Sancho, Guessand and recalled Bailey. Can you image Man Utd, Chelsea or Liverpool doing this?

I suppose I don't watch enough football these days but I literally hadn't heard of Mateta or Lacroix before Palace, or Rayan or Evanilson, or even Semenyo, at Bournemouth. I dunno, it just seems like these players were well scouted to fit into a system in a first team. It just makes me frustrated that we're either, be good immediately or be good in three years and rarely inbetween.

Getting these players to perform with less pressure at midtable clubs is one thing. Hitting the ground running at CL teams is much more difficult. Semenyo has managed it but he's not that young and was bang in-form, he's just carried that on.

Asensio and Rashford integrated pretty quickly.

I guess it depends on who you get in and the size of your budget.

They can’t be, which seriously leaves us lacking in depth and quality. I can only presume this has been the reason for the very slow, conservative approach. Then tonight we’ve been far more progressive and it’s left us far to high and disjointed at the back.

You're probably right. I just wouldn't mind Emery sculpting some clay rather than trying to superglue broken pottery all the time.

Longest time Unai has spent at as manager anywhere was Valencia, 8 days short of 4 years.
He started with us 1st November 2022.

There's a couple of factors. Is Emery getting the players out of his disposal? No for me. He designed a brilliant midfield setup that got the best out of McGinn particularly, Ramsey even at first, Kamara and eventually Tielemans. But those players aren't available and haven't been for weeks. He keeps sticking to it even against a Chelsea midfield with an extra man tonight. Never gave us a chance to compete. Subs crazy yet again though game was probably done then anyway.

On the wider point, I fear his team is in terminal decline. I suspect he wanted to break it up last summer and we may have with CL qualification in the bag and able to move on likes of Martinez and Watkins a bit easier. But that disastrous day at Old Trafford put the breaks on that. Ended up with Ramsey leaving which I highly doubt was desired. To be fair he and the players have done incredibly well to turn around a terrible start but we hit the skids some time back and are in a deep hole now. Martinez, Mings, Digne, Watkins, Bailey - their best days are long behind them. Buendia, incredible turnaround really, but it was never sustainable. Rogers was on an outrageous hot streak that has long since cooled. Recruitment has been a big problem for some time, one Emery shouldn't be allowed to shy away from. But it's one framed around a rigged game.
