I just don’t see it. After the nightmare of going straight in after Arsène Wenger, why would he walk into the same situation at Man City and be the first manager after Guardiola? I can actually see them hiring Vincent Kompany for that difficult ‘post-Pep’ transition period. It’s a big no-no for him and from me.

Agree. Pre-Guardiola Man City were a different prospect to the post-Guardiola version. I suspect they’ll not want to change much about a move they’ve been successful under, which necessarily would mean the person coming in would not have blanket powers to alter it. There’s also going to be the *huge* and probably unrealistic expectations of instant success.

Emery turned down the Newcastle job before he took us on, at a point when they’d have been the more attractive proposition on paper. NSWE have also been clever in getting Real Union integrated within our wider structure which is another small but not insignificant reason for Emery to see his medium-to-long term future as being with us, with complete control over the football side of things & some influence on the other side of things (eg change in approach to closing the North Stand as it may impact the playing side).

The one thing running against us is the financial side, but that side of the income is growing rapidly and looks likely to continue.

Emery’s unlikely to get what he has with us anywhere else - complete control of the football side of the club, complete financial freedom within the foreseeable future, and ability to compete at the top end (Champions League) of the spectrum. It’s a unique set of circumstances and I’m sure he realises that.

Love Unai, and he’s brilliant, but I think he got it wrong today. I always think essentially leaving the midfield short, centrally, is a mistake. It’s so hard to build angles without that - and that manifested with us, it took us so long to move the ball from side to side they could reorganise easily.

I also thought it was clear we needed a physical presence, instead we reduced that as the game went on.

Given Barkley and Onana didn't get on and Buendia played there, it would suggest it was either Bogarde or Hemmings.

No team in the league can carry 5 injuries to the midfield and their best centre forward being injured. Past two home games in the league we've come up against low block shite, bereft of options.

I dont think the midfield was the problem in the second half mainly because we were on top. It just need some creativity which is probably why he brought Bailey on instead of Onana. The option of an extra forward would have been great but all he could do was throw Harvey Elliott on.
