It is, 76.32%. Next is Tuchel 74.80, Blanc 72.83% and Enrique 68.31%.

The best comment I saw about how pointless XG is came from a Liverpool fan. He pointed out that if you gave Gerrard and Risse five shots each from the edge of the box and also gave Phil and Gary Neville five shots each from the same place the XG would be the same as it takes no account of the skill of the individuals involved. For our equivalent substitute the scousers with Rogers and an other (Tielemans / Onana / Buendia etc) and the point is well made.

Yes, I saw something like that today, using Slippy and Spitty instead.

Also, it takes no account of the keepers facing the shot.

xG isn't meant to take any of that into consideration. Used as intended, xG over an extended period of time is useful. As has been posted previously, we're currently 'breaking' football, time will tell if it's sustainable. Will be great if it is.

The Villa Podcast lad said after the West Ham game that Bowen's tap in after a hopelessly shanked shot fell to him would be about a million xg, whilst Rogers fantastic skill after the team had opened up space for him is tiny.

Do clubs build teams using xg as a data metric?

I don't really think that's the case. We just currently have the team and the set up to score the type of goals that will only work if you have really good players to do it.

If you had, I dunno, Ronaldo, Le Tissier, Beckham and Ibrahimovic in your team and your sole tactic was to try and make space for them around 25 yards out and just tell them to shoot as often as possible, you haven't broken any metrics, you've just got players who are better than most are at the thing you want them to do.

Rogers is supposedly the player most "over-performing" his xG this season, the last couple of seasons it was Haaland and Foden. They weren't breaking football, they're just better than most other footballers at scoring goals, like Rogers is.

This is a great interview. I like Balague too. My big take from it is the control that UE has is the main reason we need not worry about other “bigger” clubs taking him from us.

A bit harsh on yourself, I think you're a good egg, a decent poster.

Not sure about building a team based on it.

But I do recall Dean Smith saying he wasn’t worried about Villa’s indifferent > poor restart after Covid, as the XG suggested we were creating chances and the results would turn.

From memory -up until Trez v Palace at home - we looked a bit less bad defensively. But as bad/possibly even worse in attack than we were before the restart.

But it does show that not all Villans are from Birmingham. We’re a broad church which is proof that we’re a world renowned club.
