You don't always do it deliberately.

I actually don't think it's all that big a mystery, what's up with us.

First problem, we're a bit of a solved team. Emery needs to work out how to overcome the tactical issues.

Second problem, we didn't refresh enough. Not much we can do about that beyond firing Monchi I guess.

Third problem (related to the first and especially second), we're demoralised. And like, we shouldn't be, that's illogical captain, but human beings aren't especially logical and we're going to have to find a way around it.

I think the first problem to solve is, funnily enough, problem one. Give us something else to do on the pitch, new spaces to run into, new shit to do, perhaps it'll re-energise the minds of the players, perhaps it'll suit the players we've got better, perhaps it'll just improve everyone's mood and focus. It could be a big tweak or a small, I don't know. But for me, this is the thing we should be doing, because honestly it's the easiest and most obvious problem to solve (and it's a really, really hard problem, don't get me wrong, but it's the easiest one of the three). And this is on Unai.

Maatsen should have played today, I don’t get why he’s not playing every week now. Elliot must be starting too, we’re too static and void of ideas.

He was starting regularly at the end of last season but then on the final day he contributed to the two Man. United goals and feels like Emery has lost faith in him again as a starter.

If we want to continue scrapping out low scoring draws then it is fine to continue with Digne. To actually start climbing the league we're going to have to start giving a run of starts to players who still have much to prove and Maatsen is certainly one of those types.

I thought he'd been sent off when he charged down the tunnel.

We consistently have one of the oldest starting 11s in the PL. I also doubt anyone else is consistently fielding a starting 11 that is mainly players that have been at the club for 4 years or more.

The next game is on Thursday. He needed to start the video analysis immediately.

Was it only Rogers and Guessand that were Emery signings in that first 11 today?

Newcastle might be the closest to that. Not that they are doing much better apart from managing to hang on to a win against Wolves at home.

Newcastle and Everton are similar. We've had the 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th and 13th oldest starting 11s so far.

No and it’s incoherent as well. Two of those players are Mings and Buendia, now the former is a far more useful squad player than the latter if we want to be competing for Europe. But Unai talks about the importance of control - those two players are noticeably poorer than others at effective passing, retaining the ball. That’s not the say Mings, in particular, doesn’t add other things. But if you want to control the game those two players are worse at it.

We are not playing like we want, we are missing our identity ” said a clearly exasperated Emery. “We were not dominating or controlling the ball, even with an extra man.

“We have to work on our identity, I’m not disappointed or angry with the result, I am angry with how we are playing.

“We need to show our personality to be able to play. We were lazy sometimes. We are not playing our style.

“We have the experience of the last three years when we were feeling confident ... when I say lazy, I mean when you play away from home, you have to fight in every duel and we were not always doing that.

“They do not look like my team, we do not look comfortable playing. I am confident we will fix it, we will feel more comfortable. Collectively we have to try and understand that.”

This is extraordinary.

He has just thrown the players under the bus, I agree with him but when the manager calls out the players it usually ends one way.

Yeah with half the ****** being fucked off. I'd rather have a shit season and see the players fired into the channel in a giant trebuchet and keep Emery. Utterly useless cowardly ******. Grow some fucking testicular fortitude and put a bastard cross in or be brave enough to take a man on.
