Has previous unai teams been this bad defensively?
No idea but they apparently go off the rails a bit after a a couple of years which lines up with us. I wonder what our 20+ coaching team do day to day.

No, 2024 has been comfortably his worst defensively.

Good evening. Maybe a little bit because we played 90 minutes more or less deserving more. We were clinical when creating chances. We spoke about this match before and we needed to try to dominate. They are a very good team with keeping possession. We started not 100% in the meeting we had before to face them.

What does his last sentence mean?

Pressure on him a bit now ,

I'm sure he'll pick the right cava for the NYE celebrations at Villa Unai.

Not for the first time Unai was too slow with the subs. The warning signs were there after their triple substitution but he didn’t do anything. We desperately needed something to combat Mitoma, be that some pace at right back (Ned) or extra cover (Philogene -in Bayern Munich mode).

I do think this season we’ve been a bit too big for our boots at times where a bit of underdog pragmatism would be better. I can only assume he felt the team on the pitch would get a third goal yesterday and wasn’t worried about them, which was a mistake.

As I said at the time, love Unai but it was really poor management to hold off on those subs last night - particularly subbing Tielemans off. It was really apparent he was knackered and making mistakes. Had we made those subs 5 mins earlier I think we win the game.

I have been thinking about it a lot last night and this morning.

Basically Unai is too good a coach to not see the issues we see.  And he too good a coach to not be able to fix them.  So he is choosing not to fix them.  He wants us to play in a certain way this season and he’s determined to make us do it.

I don’t understand it - but it’s like at the end of a Agatha Christy - at some point all will become clear and the problem will be solved.

Some people smarter than me may have an idea what it is - but we seem to be happy to cede position and run less.  We’re not trying to control games in the same way - but if we wanted to we could.

The high line has been replaced and a lot more of this sideways passing

I really don’t think I am.  When he decides to we can still defend fine - like against Man City or Byern

We can control games  when he wants us to - like the second half v Man City

He is choosing not to fix these issues - or at least not to fix them in the obvious way

Yeah, I was thinking that last night. Remember all those analysis videos last autumn of all four of our defenders in a perfect line, right down to the shape of their bodies and how we were so tightly drilled that we had caught opponents offside a billion times more than anyone else?

I liked those times.
