Our record under Emery is 2pts per game. If we continued that for the whole season (i.e. our form dropped off this season but levelled to that of his whole tenure), we'd almost certainly finish top 4.

Over the past 20 years, there has only been one definite occasion where a side amassing 76 points wouldn't have made it, and 2 other occasions where goal difference would have been the decider. There are occasions where we'd finish 2nd or 4th but on most occasions it would be a 3rd place finish.

I don't think anyone could deal with being shot point blank with a rocket. That is too big a problem to deal with. If Axl Rose absolutely must shoot someone point blank then a water pistol would be better but only filled with water and not too hot.

Sometimes i wonder whether he doesn’t get the credit he deserves because he just doesn’t court the media in a way that defines the modern day manager. He never rants and raves, he never moans about a referee decision, he never bleats about an opponent, he never even rolls out the cliched ‘we deserved more’ after a defeat or draw. Compare that to virtually every other high profile manager, especially the likes of Klopp and Guardiola, but even Moyes saying our clear penalty definitely wasn’t one on Sunday.
He just gets his head down does his job brilliantly, stylishly but quietly.

Ollie Watkins had praise for this team in his lovely interview after the win v West Ham on Sunday. I think it was Sky.

One year on I am feeling very reflective. I can remember, when the rumour first started to gather momentum I looked up his CV and it just blew my mind. I knew he was better than his reputation at Arsenal but I hadn't realised just how much silverware he had won.

When the appointment was confirmed  a day or two later i just had this sense that we were entering a new and exciting era, for real. We had somebody who had been there and got the t-shirt rather than the usual hopeful punt we tend to take with managers

The funny thing is, like most villa fans, I suspected we had got ourselves a cup specialist who could take us to a trophy. One year in, and it hasn't worked out like that but he has turned us into a serious team in the league for the first time in at least 14 years and, arguably, since the 90s.

I have a hunch that Emery noticed early on that our players were good eggs who can be coached - we have seen that with our own eyes in the way they have all gone up a level. I think he saw that we could compete with the best teams in the league.
