Imagine if we hadn't been so wasteful in front of goal, though. Even if it hadn't changed the Liverpool result, it'd look even better than where we are now.

Yesterday for example, we could easily have won 3-0

Just pointing out that the difference he's made in a very short time.

He's taken a group of "lost souls" and just by dint of his (not inconsiderable) coaching ability turned things around. We've become better organised, more difficult to beat and able to grind out results that under Gerrard were completely beyond us.

Give him more time at BMH and the summer to bring in players that suit his plans and a European place next season should be within our grasp.

You never know, with a bit of luck, we might even be dusting off our passports for a few autumnal foreign trips.

have you noticed it's all gone quiet on the Gerrard front from his media friends regarding  how we shafted him

And ultimately this is our Achilles heel regarding top 6 this season.

You're not wrong, our poor scoring numbers are a concern. That's probably why Emery has worked so hard on making us much better defensively, knowing that we might only score one goal in a game - and that one goal needs to bring the maximum reward - yesterday being a prime example.

There's still a few days to go before the window closes, so we still have time to strengthen up front. Duran's obviously one for the future, but I expect we'll see him get minutes this season.

We've scored 16 goals in 9 games since Gerrard was sacked, over a season that would be 65-70 goals. For context there's rarely more than 3 or 4 teams that get 70 a season and they are almost always the top 4. Our goals column looks a lot worse because we spent the first quarter of the season with a manager who seemed to have absolutely no idea how to the set the team up to create chances, not because it's a massive problem with the squad that needs to be fixed.

We need a forward and winger, we all know that, but it's because the squad is very thin in those areas, not because we're desperate to add more goals to the team.

This is good - too be honest, under SG there was loads more about the difference he made - but this shows the impact he has had

I think the issue is the accusation of the owners not backing him if  we don't bring anyone in. We've already had the 'get your fucking finger out' nonsense. I'm not saying we don't néed players to push on, of course we do. Do we need them right now? Yeah, it would help but if we can't get the ones he wants, what can you do? He's already hinted at waiting until the summer. People need to chill.

I would agree under normal circumstances, but there seems there could be a real opportunity with the seasons that Chelsea and Liverpool are having that might not usually be there.

After Gerrard's 6th game we were 9th having played 17 games and were 5 points off 5th.

Quite.

I like the fact that Emery is prioritising improving the squad before spending money to solve our problems. That said, I’d be amazed if NSWE didn’t back him if he requested a particular player (or two).

What is it that you think that proves?

He started well Gerrard. Easier run than Emery though. Emery keeps saying it is about maintaining it when the shiny new manager bounce wears off though, so I think he's a bit better prepared than Steven was for the dip.

Watch that, from the Southampton match.

He has us playing some seriously good football. My first thought watching it was how much difference a cool head up front would make.
