None of them would dare take the piss out of a black or Asian because They're Not Racist. That impersonator is the unfunniest thing to come out of Liverpool since Stan Boardman.

I saw him at Pontins once. They bombed our chip shop you know. (Germans, not Pontins).

Furthermore reason to why Unai will be fittingly perfect for Villa

Juan Mata on El Maestro extract from the book

"The managers I’ve known all had their own specific way of working. Apart from the set pieces, I think what’s special about Unai is the way he communicates. In his talks, he used to write, three, four or five things on the board: those were the points he was going to bring up. Sometimes it was five phrases or metaphors he was going to explain. I’ve never seen that with my other managers.

“They usually revolved around phrases about positivity, camaraderie, the values he wanted to create in his team. To do that, he did something no one else did, that is, he communicated by means of the points he had written down. His talks could go on and on because he didn’t notice the time and carried on talking, but what he said was always intense, and he would ask you questions. That turned it into a kind of seminar that brought in the whole group.

“One particular memory stands out for me. He was talking about the criticism we’d received after we’d lost a match. This was pretty harsh, and so he talked about our relationship with the press and how we should react to the criticisms: ‘I don’t read what they write about us when things are going badly. I don’t let myself be influenced by what they might say, and only read the press when things are going well’.

He liked positive thinking and the fact that it gives you more energy. He was also the first manager who talked to us about the incredibly complicated relationship there can be with criticism: the pressure, the repercussions and how to manage them. If you’re a professional footballer, you’re open to negative comments with every game, but he showed us that we were above all that, that the journalists could say what they liked, we had to concentrate on our job, which was to make progress. [...] I think that the emotional factor, particularly in football, is a very important phenomenon.

“I think that being confident gives you more freedom, it liberates you, helps you have the courage to do things on the football pitch. You have to feel free enough to do what your body is telling you to do. Sometimes though, the pressure of winning and the fear of defeat limit your performance. I used to talk about that with Unai and Carcedo because I needed to. Their positive attitude, even at the most difficult moments, meant that the players felt more relaxed on the pitch. And that’s what I found personally.”

That's our kind of guy.

The 5 things on the board thing is something i do a lot at work when I running training, etc.

It sounds really wanky but I tend to put thinks that can relate to everything I'm talking about so I can get people to think about why we're doing something and how it relates to what's on the board. I got taught it by a lecturer years ago and it really works to get people to pay attention and remember what you've presented.

Well he has seen how some of the fringe players perform tonight, I'm sure like many of us he will realise that quite a few are not worthy of wearing the shirt.

The trouble is if you use a cup compeition to make stupid decisions, you don't get a chance to put it right until next season. Gerrard would have been (rightly) absolutely slaughtered for that starting eleven tonight.

No issue at with his approach tonight - it’s his 2nd game, he will have learnt a lot about players he won’t want around going forward, and I want to see us concentrate on PL survival before we start concentrating on cup wins.

I reckon we will beat Brighton at the weekend, 6 from 6, and go into the break in great spirits.

Needed to see the wider squad so no issues with team selection as ,much as we'd love to win a cup, this was a free hit for him before the break.  He's now seen the worst (Olsen) and the best and worst (Mings, McGinn) of a few so he can see what he's really got.  Surprised Sanson had no game time though.

Yeah but Gerrard has had a year to assess the squad while Emery has had 1 game so it's not really the same is it.

He didn’t need to assess the squad away at Old Trafford in a crucial cup match. I hope this doesn’t show a poor attitude towards domestic cups.

I'm not going to argue that Gerrard was a success but he played the strongest team he could in the FA Cup against the same opponents last season.

Yes, Gerrard respected the cup match last year.

He will have over a month with nearly all of them. He's a good coach so that should be enough time to work out who he wants to keep going forward, who isn't good enough etc. I don't see what he learnt from 1 game tonight that he wouldn't during numerous training sessions and watching older matches etc during the World Cup break, but now we're out of a cup. Others may disagree but it's how I see it. I also still fully support him and expect him to be great for us.

I'm really not sure what the problem is with team selection here. Olsen, Mings and McGinn were the issues 2nd half tonight and 2 of those have been first team regulars all season and captains. If anything, I'd have liked to have seen Sanson and Archer too.

No different to what we put out at Chelsea last season, could be wrong but can't remember him getting pelters.

And we played scratch teams up to SF of league cup 19/20. Luckily we played the under 12s of Wolves and Liverpool in that run.

Fact is for all this weak side stuff we were 2-1 up and had most of our first choice team on the grass. Just poor defending and game management from that point.
