Kompany is far more talented but has the same problem Gerrard had when he arrived with us, he's never had to fix something that's broken in the middle of the season. The first time they go on a run without a win for a while is when we'll get a realistic idea of how good he is.

He's only had one season as a manager and he's not made a bad start of it to be honest.

Burnley remind me very much of Norwich. They have the resources to build a side capable of smashing the Championship, but will they struggle with resources converting that into a team that can survive the Premier League.

As I understand it, Burnley's owners borrowed money to buy the club, and then used the club's cash in hand to pay off some of the debt once they were in control. I did hear talk that they'd used the parachute payments to also service the debt.

A good manager with clever recruitment could see them do well, but it doesn't take much to go wrong for it all to start crumbling.

They're a club who, if they were well run and are smart in the transfer market, could fairly reliably sustain a team that finishes lower mid table in the Premier League on a regular basis, maybe occasionally qualifies for Europe.

Their problem is that description applies to any one of about 20 clubs that spend their lives drifting between the top 3 divisions, and good luck doesn't last forever.

4 seasons (sort of)

He was player-manager of Anderlecht, then stepped down to become just a player, then at the end of that season retired, became manager for 2 seasons, then went to Burnley.

I don't know much else about his time in Belgium but his Burnley side absolutely battered the championship, and for what its worht what I've seen of him in interviews suggests he is a very intelligent man.  Potentially an excellent manager.

He was a manager in the Netherlands because Danks worked with him there for a while.

If you play it really badly you’ll get caught out. It’s not a case of being found out, it’s about getting it right.

I really don't expect a coach of Emery's calibre to miss the fact his tactics were wrong today.

How we respond to these last few days is going to tell us a lot about those running the club, the manager and coaches, and the players.

The high line didn't start very well, but it looked decidedly more ragged after Mings went off.
