That’s the remit of anyone in any job. What he’s actually, tangibly delivered in the space of 9 months is phenomenal. I cannot think of another manager who might have done that. Eddie Howe is rightly lauded for the job he’s done at Newcastle. But he only got them to 11th starting at the club at around the same time as Emery the year before. For me he’s delivered. And he will look to continue to deliver on new goals that are set.

The difference with O'Neill is that this feels strategic and more structured, rather than a power play to sooth someone's ego. We have a genius in charge, we need to give him all the tools he wants to get to work effectively. Now's the time to really go for it.

Also makes him harder to poach if he is moulding the club in the way he wants it to be.

The biggest difference between this and MoN is that Sawaris and Edens won't take the bullshit that Lerner did.

And MON always thought we were luckier to have him than he was to have us. Emery has humility. He's driven, but he also understands we all have to go on the journey together or it isn't going to work.

I'd much rather have an somebody like Emery being a proper old school 'manager' and doing 90% himself rather than the more modern 'head coach' backed up by a director of football.

The other massive difference is that Unai makes players better with his coaching, MON not so much.

And the hair. MON could only dream of having that mane.

I presume Pubehead's hair only starting growing around 12 years of age.

O'Neill would never be able to rock urban youthwear with such panache either. He even leaves Sherwood in the shade when it comes to gilets.  #Stoney4Unai

Martin O'Neill had no time for Directors of Football etc. (and still doesn't according to a recent interview) and I suspect held / holds the slightly antiquated view that a manager should run the club from 'top to bottom' (influenced no doubt by the views of a certain former manager of his!).

Unai Emery clearly sees the need for such positions, but apparently wants to have some influence in the appointments.  I think that is a pretty major difference - I suspect MON was very suspicious of people in those roles and didn't want them 'interfering'.  UE on the other hand, sees the merit of those roles and acknowledging that importance, wants people in there who he can trust and work with.

Maybe if O’Neill had had the foresight to realise he’s not the second coming of Brian Clough and looked for some different views he wouldn’t have been so utterly out of his depth. If Lerner had also had the foresight to insist on senior appointments to help protect his investment he wouldn’t have ended up spunking nigh on half a billion quid up the wall for three 6th place finishes and a League Cup Finalists roll of “honour”. Pair of clowns.

I love what Emery has done so far and am very excited for the future.  But giving a manager this much control doesn't always end well.  We do seem to be putting all our eggs in one basket and if it does go wrong it feels like we'd be in post O'Neil territory.  Are there any other clubs where the manager has this much influence?

Sawaris and Edens are not Lerner and co.
I can’t see them allowing Emery a free hand to do as he pleases. Yes, he seems to have a lot of control, but I’d guess that would soon stop if he went MO’N on us

Agree with Ger regarding the strategy of the club. The colossal difference between MO’N and Emery is that Emery is immersed in tactics and coaching. MO’N wasn’t.

There is also the big difference in recruitment strategy of Emery v O'Neill.  The former doesn't start and end his search with Aiden McGeady if he is after a new winger for example.  I also suspect he wouldn't replace a whole back four two seasons running.
