Arsenal and Aston Villa analysts fight in the stands

A heated argument briefly turned physical after Emiliano Martinez scored an own goal and then allowed in Arsenal's fourth

Aston Villa and Arsenal staff came to blows in the stands at Villa Park after Emiliano Martinez’s dramatic own goal secured three precious points for Mikel Arteta’s side. Eyewitnesses in the press box reported a furious war of words, which Telegraph Sport understands to have briefly turned physical, between analysts of Villa and Arsenal.

Victor Manas, Unai Emery’s data and video analyst who worked with the Spaniard during his time at the Emirates Stadium, is understood to have been involved in the fracas. An Arsenal analyst, Miguel Molina, subsequently left the press box in an attempt to calm the situation, Telegraph Sport understands.

Onlookers said it seemed that Villa’s staff had reacted angrily to the nature of the celebrations of Arsenal’s analysts, and had made their feelings known.

“Like anything that happens in the stands, we will look at it, address it and take action if it’s necessary," said Arteta.
I wonder what an analyst v analyst "fracas" looks like.

Jesus Christ I can't believe some of the negativity on here. Sometimes I do wonder about Villa fans. Emery is an Elite manager only months into the job and yet people aren't 'convinced'. What do people expect. We are a mid-table squad trying to take on a new style of play. It will take time. I've seen positives under Emery in every game so far,  even when we have lost. Emery knows what Villa need. After all the shit managers we have had to endure over the past 20-30 years, I'm amazed that people don't have just a little more patience and faith in him.

He's not doing any better than any other manager though. It's like groundhog day at Villa, and this bloke couldn't even manage to get past Stevenage in the Cup.

What do you reckon we should do then?

Sack him?

He has a 50% win rate so far from his 10 games in the league. 4 loses to Liverpool, Leicester, Arsenal and Man City,  1 draw at home to Wolves.

2 home wins against Man United, Leeds, 3 away at Brighton, Southampton and Spurs. We're on for a 60 point season extrapolated across 38 games. When you think that 10 game run includes a majority of sides above us in the top 6, that's pretty decent.

He is statistically doing a lot better than Gerrard so far, with Smiths/Gerrard's squad. There's no real evidential basis to support some of the opinions from 1 or 2 this evening.

He barely been here five minutes and you’re jumping on his first bad run after a very positive start to his time here. Also there’s been signs of improvement even today, but you were willing to give Gerrard plenty of time and even near the end.

He's a top quality manager who has done well so far in difficult circumstances.

I'm glad he's our manager but as you say it's only a few months into his tenure, results and performances have been up and down so I think it's too early to say I'm "convinced".  There's so much work yet to do.

I shit myself everytime we concede a corner and that's on the coaching staff. I just fully expect someone on the edge of box to hammer one home. It's as if we didn't learn from Stevenage playing it short, you can see the opposition lining up.

The defence that played against Stevenage was entirely different to the defence that played against Man City amd 75% different in turn from the one that played today. I suspect with Carlos returning in the next mo th, the defence that finishes will be different again. Arsenal have used the least amount of players in the league so far.

As Unai noted, statistics show that goalkeepers rarely score.

Keepers may very well rarely get the final touch and do a Schmeichel.

But it's a move that often causes consternation in the opposing box. Someone needs to pick up the big barsteward who's just wandered into the penalty area and that leaves space free for others.

No issue at all with him going up for that.

But the defending in general has been muck these past few weeks, Emi included.

We need to get into position where Mings-Konsa next season is only if we have two injuries at the back.

We still need another CM imo to sit alongside Bouba. Luiz generally played well under Emery so far but he was hooked after an hour today and defensively he can be a bit lacking v quick ball movers.

Upfront Ollie is doing very well but again a decent alternative is needed while Duran develops.

What will overshadow the summer is if the manager decides he can do without Emi as replacing a top class keeper is something we could do without given the other areas of the first 11 that need significant tweaks.

No need for a new thread on it but it looks like our postponed Lesta away game from Sep when Liz Windsor died still hasn't been rescheduled. Anyone know what a likely date would be?

It looks like we only have one midweek game between now and the rest of the season, but playing every weekend til the end of May.

It still has to be how they are coached to defend corners though. If anything it being different players doing the same thing says it is more likely to be a coaching problem.

Well said Dorset! The negativity and lack of patience from some doesn’t surprise or amaze me however.

I'm baffled why we'd let somebody like Cutler go, but have kept MacPhee on.
