Isn't that our 4th loss of the season vs palace? Or was it our 3rd?
3rd loss and a draw in the league at home.
4th loss this calendar year, with the other game drawn. Scored 4 and conceded 15 in those 5 games.

Calendar year is 2025 or 2024, just call it fourth loss in less then 350 days. (I think that works out).

I have got myself into some big rows on here since November 2022 defending Unai. The man could do no wrong for me such was his immediate impact on our fortunes.

Today has been a like a cold shower. It has definitely taken the shine off how I view him.

Today was massive. I wanted the FA cup more than I wanted top 5 or even a win against PSG.

That performance has just, well, it has broken me

Being in Europe is massively important to the club.

It is and it’s crazy to want anything else.

Well Newcastle have done ok by sitting it out for a season. If we bounced back like that I'd be satisfied.

Yeah but you must realise that isn’t a strategic decision? And also just because Newcastle have had a good season doesn’t mean that happens for us. On balance I’d suggest being in the Champions League (ideally, but very little chance) or the Europa League is very important for our growth as a club.

If we end up 7th, which is looking pretty likely, it's not a great season is it.

No it’s not, especially as that could well be Conference League.

Shamrock Rovers away would be handy for some of us.

Not being in Europe one season will hardly stunt everything and go back to 2012 levels of hyping up league one players I'm sure.

We will probably lose a key player or two (like last summer when we made CL) but we have a decent core who have a solid level in the league and we now know we don't have to play a first choice 11 if it's one of the Europa competitions to do well.

If we're not in Europe full stop we can take the league cup more seriously next season.

I’m sure it won’t put us back to 2012, but we’re in a very competitive and tricky group of teams. Europe helps you attract and keep players happy.

It would be disappointing on the one hand, on the other considering we had a spell where defenders were getting nobbled quicker than a Spinal Tap drummer then it's not a disaster. We've come a massive way in a short time, and there will be setbacks at times. Imagine saying 3 years ago we'd be moaning about 7th, a CL QF and FAC SF.

The real test is what we do the last 4 games and in the summer. Adversity happens, it's how clubs respond to it that separates winners and also-rans.

Unai does need to work out how we stop setting up with an inferiority complex in big games away from home (except against Arsenal).

I wish we played Maatsen and Ramsey and really went at them with more aggression. However I still love him, best manager we’ve had in many years, probably since Little.

The way some of those players played today though, I can’t blame Emery for those on the pitch not fighting for every ball like they did.

I’d have played Maatsen - two reasons, I think Digne has been a bit below par of late but crucially we badly lacked pace and Maatsen really helps with that.
