Him and Gary Charles are probably the biggest scapegoats in my time.

A great read Mr Collett, one of my all time favourite players

I don't know about scapegoat, but Gary Charles is the most under-rated player I've ever seen. That team was never the same after he got injured.

Yep. Mark Draper another. Petrov got a lot of stick earlier in his time with us.

When I was a yoot up the Holte, Keith Bradley and Dave Poutney came in for a lot of flack, as did Alan Deakin.

Andy Lochhead went a long time before scoring his first goal, and was the subject of a derogatory song as well.
IIRC, "he ain't scored a goal since January, February, June or July".

Gary Charles was a key part of the team, and was instrumental in a large number of our chances. A modern version of him would work very well in our current set up.

I was at The Riverside to witness Wright's wonder goal.
The only game I went to together with my old man.

The article didn't mention the breakaway goal he scored away at Arsenal, or am i mixing him up with someone else?

Can't remember Wright scoring at Arsenal away. The only fullback to score upthere in that fashion is Luna as far as I can recall.

Alan Wright was def a cult hero. Loved him.
I also remember Fernando Nelson was pretty decent, although in those days I was well lubricated most matches.

Nearly destroyed his life, I remember an interview with him. Didn't get any of the attention sympathy afforded to Merson, Gazza etc. The latter almost ruined his career in the FA Cup Final 1991 as well, of course.

Think that was probably Chris Price a few years earlier.

I really liked Alan, but he did indicate a weakness at the far post due to his height.

Attending her first match, my elder daughter commented “Dad, is he the mascot?”.
