Dave Collett recalls a good thing in a small package.

Yay, my favourite player as a child!
-
Always a good bet for first scorer at 66-1. Usually came in once a season.
-
Mighty Atom
-
He was ace, one of favourite players from that time. I won a signed shirt once and he presented it to me.
-
Remember reading that he had to have blocks on the pedals of his Ferrari
-
My favorite player of that era. Chose to drive to Boro on that New Year's Day in appalling fog, got lost in the M1 Leeds roadworks, but was right behind Wrighty's shot which was going 2 Ft wide until it curled in beautifully more than made up for it.
I remember also driving back laughing at Manure losing heavily in no small part to William Prunier's debut.
-
Was sitting with Spurs fans when he hit that tremendous volley.
-
Used to be a big fave.
-
Probably hard to believe as it was 4 years.
A narrow win at Goodison meant that we were in the semis for the first time in forty years, a figure thats hard to believe, even now.
-
That was a great read. Hes one of my favourite players but Id forgotten just how long he was with us and how many mangers hed played under
-
Always had a soft spot for him. He barely missed a game from the mid to late 90s. I would sometimes worry that we didn't have an understudy but we barely needed one (I did want Najwan Ghrayib to push Wrighty).
-
My favourite moment was against Wimbledon, when wee Alan Wright out-jumped Vinnie Jones to win a header; I think it was in the 5-0 game December 1996
-
What a great read, I really enjoyed that. Thank you.
-
He is my eldest lads favourite player to this day, he still has one of those Little Alan Wright Corinthian figurines sitting proudly on the windowsill, near enough life-size in his case
He was a cracking little player remembered with fondness now but I can remember many times he was teams scapegoat in the same way as Mcginn and is at the moment, Another player who will probably be in remembered with fondness in 20 years time
-
Him and Gary Charles are probably the biggest scapegoats in my time.
-
A great read Mr Collett, one of my all time favourite players
-

I don't know about scapegoat, but Gary Charles is the most under-rated player I've ever seen. That team was never the same after he got injured.
-

Yep. Mark Draper another. Petrov got a lot of stick earlier in his time with us.
When I was a yoot up the Holte, Keith Bradley and Dave Poutney came in for a lot of flack, as did Alan Deakin.
Andy Lochhead went a long time before scoring his first goal, and was the subject of a derogatory song as well.
IIRC, "he ain't scored a goal since January, February, June or July".
-
Gary Charles was a key part of the team, and was instrumental in a large number of our chances. A modern version of him would work very well in our current set up.
-
Wasn't Charles always on the pop?
-
I was at The Riverside to witness Wright's wonder goal.
The only game I went to together with my old man.
-
Wasn't Charles always on the pop?
he's had some addiction issues
-
The article didn't mention the breakaway goal he scored away at Arsenal, or am i mixing him up with someone else?
-
Can't remember Wright scoring at Arsenal away. The only fullback to score upthere in that fashion is Luna as far as I can recall.
-
Alan Wright was def a cult hero. Loved him.
I also remember Fernando Nelson was pretty decent, although in those days I was well lubricated most matches.

Nearly destroyed his life, I remember an interview with him. Didn't get any of the attention sympathy afforded to Merson, Gazza etc. The latter almost ruined his career in the FA Cup Final 1991 as well, of course.

Think that was probably Chris Price a few years earlier.
-
I really liked Alan, but he did indicate a weakness at the far post due to his height.
Attending her first match, my elder daughter commented Dad, is he the mascot?.
-
What a brilliant read I enjoyed watching Alan Wright play for us.
-

Yeah but how many goals did we concede cos he couldn't jump high enough? Not many, as far as I remember.
-
Quite often teams used to hit the diagonal high ball over the LB position believing that they could get a height advantage, it didnt pay off because he had decent timing and leap.
-
Very reliable player always a 6 or 7 out of 10
-
A great read. He was such a sold player. I wonder as a youngster , he must have been so good being the size he was. Im sure bacj then it was a case of small players cant be defenders
A friend of mine a BMW m3 off him while he was at villa.
Not sure why I shared that

Sorry about the error re the forty years of waiting for an F A Cup semi-final. Of course, Alan was in the team that did it in 1996 as well.
The lack of a cup win since 2016 obviously addled my brain.
