He used to pick on them a bit when he was at Liverpool so I'm hopeful tonight.

The quality of the song isn't in question.  It's the willingness of people who live and presumably make a living in this country to be prepared to, at the very least, just shut the fuck up and show a bit of respect for about 60 seconds, whatever the wider view on the Royal familiy.

Fuck the jug eared, tax dodging, pro-hunting arsehole and his shitey song. He has done precisely nothing to earn my respect.

That first, childish, insult belittles the rest of the (very valid) point you're making.

FWIW I like the fact we have a national anthem, less so what it's about. We could do with something that's more about the country and less about a monarch or a god.

It's a bit like singing terrace songs, I prefer the ones that are about the Villa and players and don't get the obsessional ones about the shite across the city. But I'll join in, to help the atmosphere, or I won't and will just keep watching.

There are people who will judge whether you've joined in with the anthem, or the song, and make accusations either way. But it's about choice and people should respect it.

There are childish insults all the time on here directed to eg Liz Truss or Boris Johnson which pass without complaint. Charles Windsor should be equally open to disrespect.

A brush firmly in the hands of the mostly right wing opinion piece writers and hysterical culture war types. Who cares?

Also the point of protest is exactly this, you should because you can and this is the beauty of a free society

Is it true, that "God hates fags"?

You're confusing an individuals freedom to "protest" with another individuals freedom to judge you. It's a moral argument, a societal one, it's not about freedoms, those aren't up for debate.

There is no truth, only opinion and morals based on shaky ground either way, so I'm not confusing them, just saying we should all be less judgy. And that goes both ways.

And using the god hates fags comparison here is absolutely nonsense and you know it

I actually think it's a perfect example, but twisted up a bit. The sort of people that want their rights to say 'god hates fags' (alongside sexist, racist, transphobic, etc comments) protected are exactly the same people who will 'kick off' if someone voices their opinion on the existence of the monarchy or the nature of god. The alt-right movement likes to throw the word snowflake around whenever they get challenged on their views but completely miss the fact that all their arguments in defence of those views gets ignored when it gets flipped around.

That said I'm not sure what this has to do with the game tonight.

It has everything to do with the game tonight, Paul. The Little Mermaid should not be black. FACT.

So yeah, the game...Ings is just the type of player who would always score against us if we sold him. Time for him to do it against his old mates.

His best performance was against Leeds, IMO.

Agree with that. Genuinely think his first half showing against Leeds at home might be the best 45 minutes I've ever seen any Villa player ever play.

Yes. I have heard on good authority that God is a cigar smoker much like myself.

Villa twitter feed suggested that a few missed training yesterday, including both keepers

Seemed to be a number of people sick.
No mention of COVID. Not sure what the rules are these days regarding reporting of that or isolation

I know. I agree with the other points, that's all, just felt like they were weakened by the start. Anyway, I'll withdraw my comment for fear of spoiling a perfectly decent thread, and out of respect for the Queen, it's what she would have wanted for her son and heir. Still at least his crown will stay on, eh?

Nobody is so exercised by the constitutional settlement of the UK to feel so moved to anger that they boo during a period of respect. Even the most self proclaimed ardent Republican on here is about as committed to that cause as Small Heath's owners are to making them a serious enterprise. Booing would be all about you and drawing attention to yourself, so have a day off from such narcissistic tendencies.

This is my view.

I'll be silent with everyone else in respect for the grandmother of a Villa fan, not for the ceremonial office she held.

I'll be silent during the anthem, as I have been during every anthem I've been present for
I never sung as a kid due to having a crap voice. Since around age twelve I've been an atheist and anti-royalist, so have opted out for that reason.

In my view funerals and commemorations are not the time for protests, whether permissible or not.

Either stay silent or stay away.

The Coronation however, that's different

This seems like the sensible, grownup thing to do if for nothing else then that any overt show of defiance will provoke a reaction that will negatively impact the atmosphere.

We cannot afford to be tentative but if we can start positively and get on top of them early we should win.

You'd think if it was serious concern we'd have signed a keeper on short term deal, Newcastle and Everton both signed keepers this week to cover this weekend's games.

One of the two will play, hopefully Emi who I'm sure has played through injuries for us given he's been struggling to kick the ball near end in a few of them.

No idea who the sub keeper would be given we loaned Sinsalo out. Is Steer fit now from his latest achilles injury?
