1 Feb 1986 : Villa 0 Southampton 0 Att 8,456.

Not only a dreadful game but the lowest gate I ever attended for a league game at Villa Park. The Holte End was a lonely place to be that day.

Loving this thread, I was at so many of those games others have mentioned. It’s a bloody tough one to call, so I’ll throw in Boro away in the Zenith Data semi final. Getting knocked out one game from Wembley on a Wednesday night and having the coach bricked before a four hour trip home.

Similarly, West Ham away in the League Cup. A crush that could easily have been another Hillsborough, getting beat and losing the bloody coach only to chase it as it headed up the road. Catching it at the lights and getting on was the highlight of the night.

Temperature was about minus 8 degrees C. Gary Shaw had a late chance and for a split second, as I jumped in anticipation of a goal that never arrived, I actually thought my feet were going to shatter.

Against Everton in 94 when the League cup was paraded was pretty awful. It was bouncing down during and after the match and I remember my brother's Evertonian mate saying "I forgive the players now" as we got drenched on the way back to the car.

Also Wigan away in the McLeish season, Bent injured after five minutes and fuck all else happened. Had been a great pre match, absolutely buzzing at kick off and had the life sucked out of us by the match.

That Everton match was 0-0? I seem to remember an Everton player taking a shot from the half way line and that being about the only highlight

Two away matches a week or so apart that I was at. Bradford in the League cup semi final and Millwall in the FA cup. The sheer inaptitude of our players and Lambert was mind numbing and as a fully grown man it's the nearest I have come close to crying at a football matches.

In terms of humiliation I'd say it's a struggle to top losing away to Bradford.

They were at the time a league 2 team and shambolic a couple of the goals we conceded from set pieces. To top it all off only just barely beat them at VP and went out over two legs so given that was a big opportunity to actually win a trophy that one stung for quite a while.

Was a horrible few weeks when you add in the batterings we got in the league, can remember Wigan who were actually below us coming to VP and winning 3-0 and it could easily have been six.

On the criteria chosen by Mr Russell I would go for Villa v Ipswich in 1976. A dreary 0-0 snooze fest by two inept teams. The game was so tepid that the main talking point was a flock of pigeons encamped on the pitch in the second half, a fact picked up by the Evening Mail.

In a similar vein mine is probably Wimbledon away at Plough Lane in Oct. 1990, a sparsely attended 0-0 draw. My only memory is two drunk blokes down at the front singing "Jozef Venglos' claret & blue army" for 90 mins much to the bemusement of the solitary copper watching.

I came back from Paris for the weekend and went to that. I can’t remember a thing about the game, other than the fact it was better than the 3-2 defeat there in 1986.

The lowest I remember feeling was Lambert's first home game against Everton. I left at 0-3, the only time I've left a game early, because it was toxic in the Lower Holte. The first game of a new season should be a time of hope, but there was just anger everywhere, and because Lambert was brand new it was unfocused anger, flying in all directions.

Losing at home to Watford during the relegation season was grim, but I think I was resigned to it by that point.

Bradford and Millwall do stand out, but they were eclipsed by the earlier trio of horror shows at Chelsea ( the record league defeat), followed by abject home displays against Spurs and Wigan.

Goodness knows how Lambert survived that season.

I could pick at least four from Lambert’s reign alone.

Worst ever though, I give it to the 2015 FA Cup final. I got an impromptu flight back from LA to be there having landed a ticket on the Thursday prior. To lose obviously, but the tepid, no-show nature of it really stung. Such a massive let down.

An FA Cup 3rd Round replay in January 1991 away against Wimbledon at Plough Lane.  Freezing cold evening, torrential rain that soaked through to your underpants, had to endure the most boring 0-0 though to extra time only to lose in the 119th minute to a Alan Cork deflected pee roller.

Spent most of ET staring through the portacabin loo windows that were constantly being steamed up with clouds of steaming piss as it was still better than being outside. Nightmare....

Yes that was a truly shit night, made worse by the windscreen wiper blades of my car giving up on the way home in that weather.

Our recent history? I would go for the home game against Liverpool in our relegation season 6-0

But the most disappointing, gut wrenching defeat for me is still the FA Cup quarter final against West Ham, I honestly thought that was our year to win the Cup.

Blose away in 2002 when we lost 3-0, but the worst bit was the Enckelman embarrassment, especially against that lot!
