The two goals that always stand out to me in the title winning season were Tony Morley's at Everton and
Dennis Mortimer's against Liverpool at Villa Park. I don't have to look them up, I can conjure them up in my mind's eye vividly including Dennis Mortimers goal celebration.

Even after all these years I can still hear myself screaming:-
“Go on Dennis! Go on Dennis! Go on Dennis!Gooooallll!”

Wonderful memories

Happy birthday Sir
Briiliant!
Me too!!!

Happy birthday Captain!
And me.
Little did we know at the time how emblematic that goal vs Redscouse would be of our only top-division title in my lifetime!

Happy Birthday Dennis.  I still get nightmares that the Liverpool goalkeeper wipes you out.  With the rest of the Holte I watched that goal unfold in slow motion.

Can you imagine the captain of any other league title winning team, and a European Cup winning captain not getting a single England cap? Scandalous!

What a player though!

Happy Birthday!

That was the moment that I realised that we could go on and win the league. Happy Birthday Dennis

When Ron bought him from Coventry, he said, " I have bought the fans a Christmas present"
What an enduring present it was
In my mind Dennis sweeping through the middle of the park to score against Liverpool
An outspoken critic of Doug and his lack of ambition
All Hail to the Captain

PS
Any idea we could find another leader on the pitch like him?

I remember watching the goal against Liverpool on the Holte End , and thinking Sir Dennis thought he was offside (the way he kept looking sideways) .I know now he was probably looking to avoid a Liverpool tackle or more likely to feed Shaw or Withe a pass if they were in a better position.
My favourite thing about that goal ( and many others that season , like Morley's wonder goal at Everton) was our captains understated celebrations. A smile , a handshake or a round of applause (Morley's goal). It set the scene that we belonged up there at the top of the league . It epitomised the phrase "a captain by example". I think it rubbed off on his team mates and in no small measure us as fans.

When I was a kid, it must have been around 1973, an FA X1 came to Australia.
It was like a squad of fringe England players and Dennis Mortimer was included in the party still with Coventry at that time.
I remember getting his autograph never knowing that he would one day he would lift the European Cup for us less than ten years later.
I don't have the programme from that game anymore with the autographs of the FA X1 players unfortunately.
Great leader and great player from probably our greatest ever team.
We could sure use his leadership today.

Happy Birthday Dennis and many more to follow hopefully. 1980 - What a year to be chosen by Villa, as a wide-eyed 7 yr old kid! It’s funny at that age, you just think things will always be the same. Villa always seemed to win back then. You never expected any different. Then the kit changes, Saunders walks out, Doug sells most of the European cup winning team and you begin to learn what life really is. Happy times for Villa fans back then. That side were pretty much all legends in my eyes, but Dennis M was the leader.

Never forget the smile on his face when he scored against Liverpool. He enjoyed the goal at Goodison as well!

I have a European Cup replica shirt signed by Sir Dennis. To those of us from that era he'll always  be regarded as the greatest captain of our lifetime.
