For those who are slating our captain, here are the ratings from the B'ham Mail:

I wouldn't have made him Motm and there were a few sloppy moments but his leadership, determination and resilience are vital in games like this.

Deserved to be in front at half time and then rode the storm second half. Every win should be cherished and this is no different. Easier run of games on paper coming up, let's see if we can get a run going.

Was a tough game and could have gone either way. Had concerns prior to the game of the no more Benitez effect but we did great. Moment of quality from Buendia-he’s looking a great player

I think that's about fair, Digne, Cash, Mings and Buendia were the 4 I had in the running for motm and I couldn't really understand why so many people were criticising Mings on the match thread.

Result aside, that was a rotten performance. Two really poor teams. Everton have to be in real danger of going down. Cash shut down Gray really well, Digne was very good. Konsa and Luiz solid. After that, individually and collectively poor. How McGinn lasted 96 mins is a mystery.

Martinez 6 - very little to do
Cash 7 - shut down Gray really well, liked his cynical yellow that McGinn was at fault for
Konsa 7 - solid as always
Mings 5 - so many mistakes and poor decisions
Digne 7 - to be fair, he does look an improvement on Targett
Luiz 7 - solid performance in front of back 4
Ramsey 6 - some very good moments in first half but quiet in second half
McGinn 3 - rubbish
coutinho 5 - some nice touches in first half, no impact in second
Buendia 6 - see Countinho but got the goal
Watkins 4 - gets into good positions but again wasted pretty much every opportunity. His first touch is rotten.

Chucky and Ings hardly got a kick. Hause at least won a few headers. Gerrard was far too slow to make changes and very fortunate not to pay the price.

Some really harsh scores!

Mings 5 for keeping a clean sheet.

Not McGinn's best game but a 3.

That's ridiculous.
It's the same every week from him. Attention seeking.

I didn't see the game, but I love Tyrone Mings, and will happily have his babies.

A good win. Was hanging in there at times towards the end.

Pleased for Buendia, he’s turning it on lately.

Winning away ugly is ok with me when games get scrappy like that.

Job done, thought we stood up well to such a direct approach.  I thought that back pass for a corner aside that Mings was excellent, attacked everything and got some vital blocks in.  Suspect Konsa wasn’t 100%.

McGinn started on fire then disappeared & Watkins seemed very slow whenever the ball came his way

Pretty much spot on. We had to show another side of our game today and we delivered. It wasn't pretty at times but then we were up against Duncan Ferguson's Everton so it never was going to be. Big worry still remains the lack of real chances we're creating. Playing so much through the middle doesn't produce much except shots from outside the box. Not sure Ollie is suited to working with far better technical players around him. His first touch is poor and his second not much better.

Overall, a tough, niggly game where we more than held our own and a very welcome win and three points.

Mings made a couple of fuck ups and school boy errors (giving corner in first half trying to pass to Martinez under no pressure) anyway we did not concede.
Bunedia best player on pitch first half, dropped off in second but was trying to urge the team to move up as we were under a semi self inflicted cosh
SJM , never a 3, I think Bronte has a downer on him, he pissed them off a lot
Great win, could have had big Dunc headlines written all over it
