Yet another player who's made me look a div.

He sold Konsa out in the first game which led to the red card, he's been superb since.

I've always thought the criticism of him was over the top anyway though because a huge part was around him always playing safe and going back instead of throwing in crosses but that was clearly tactical and I'm not sure it was fair to blame him for it.

What they've worked on though is that when he does avoid the cross he now often instead drifts in and adds himself into the midfield (this is really noticeable when Bogarde is playing because then Bogarde steps back into the defence in his place).

And add to that his left peg delivery improving when he does cut inside.

There was a passage of play in the first half where Anthony Gordon ran away from him to such an extent, I thought "blimey, Matty has really lost a couple of yards of pace, that's worrying".  But I've been told that Gordon is actually very rapid indeed (I'd never noticed before).

Apart from that incident, he did really well to force Gordon onto his (obviously much weaker) left foot for most of the balls her put in.

Id echo SE's thoughts here. I swore loudly and vociferously about him at the back end of last season particularly after the Wembley no show. He's been excellent and a solid consistent 7/10 performer week in week out.

Feel the same. At times over the last few years I've felt he was out weakest link. He's been brilliant and I'd go one step further and say he's one of the best fullbacks anywhere. Absolute incredible season from him..

The 'drifter', he doesn't use it that often but that's part of it's danger, everyone is expecting a whipped ball and he brings out this arching, fading slider that has defenders confused and the keeper doing the hokey cokey.

With Emery’s guidance he has managed to become the complete package as a modern fullback. Defensively sound, energetic, comfortable on the ball, good delivery from his crosses and a real threat with his long range shooting.

Has there been a subtle shift in tactics too?  We seem to attack down both flanks now rather than solely overloading on the left.  This may have released Cash’s handbrake a bit.

Yep, I agree. Cash has been crossing the halfway line much more regularly (although he still does the pull back thing, just not as often), and offering more width in attacking areas. Guessand being shit at attacking but ok at working hard and tracking back might have contributed to this.

Biggest improvement has been his fitness. Missed 18 games last season, some of those might have been for Poland, but that caused us real problems in his absence with likes of Konsa, Bogarde, Disasi all struggling. Saw a report suggesting he spent a lot of time over the summer working on his conditioning to avoid more injuries. Do realise I'm tempting fate here!
