Yep, pretty much anyone staying up at Newcastle's expense is always the preference. Everyone loves some Jawdee tears!!!

Except perhaps Dirty Leeds, and the uncriticizable  Bielsa

I'd like Newcastle and Leeds to go down, and if Norwich go too then I ain't fussed.

Norwich 2-0 Everton  half time. Smith really got them going!
Good to see.

I only really care about the villa. Soz.

Same. I'll always remember Dean fondly, he did a very good job for us and is one of very few managers we've had this century that I'd stand and applaud. But I don't really give a shit how he does for anyone that isn't us, sorry.

I'd rather Norwich stayed up ahead of Newcastle or Burnley, but that's as far as it goes. Mind you that would be the case whoever was manager.

Yeah exactly, Norwich are fine, I have some pleasant memories of us beating them, and they're all yellow and have a bird on their badge. And if Dean does well for them great, good for him and them.

I'd also rather have them in the PL than Newcastle or Burnley, but potentially that's a very long list, which includes Chelsea, Leeds, Liverpool, Man Utd, Man City, Arsenal, Tottenham, West Ham, Leicester, Brentford, Crystal Palace, Brighton, Southampton, Watford and Wolves.

There are clubs I respect, there are clubs I hate less than others, but there are no clubs in English football I care enough about to monitor their fortunes.

To go down the route of a Government campaign, for me it's Villa, Villa, Villa (and bollocks to everyone else).

I would be very happy if Deano could keep them up.

I think he got a rough deal at the villa, however can see the reasonning behind his sacking - Gerrard not a better coach but has the name which attracts better players

He didn’t get a rough deal at all. His management record was one of the worst in 2021. Relegation form and on a 5 game losing streak. He had loads to spend and any time we didn’t have Grealish we were mostly dreadful. He had his chance. He did a lot of good things. But his dismissal was entirely warranted.

He brought us back, kept us up and gave us a platform to build on. I will love and respect him forever for that.

Well said, Leeg. That's his legacy. Whatever we go on to achieve (hopefully shitloads) Dean will have been the first step on that road.

Am very grateful for everything Smith did, more so on reflection now that he's gone. He's one of us and definitely has the club at heart. I hope he does well at Norwich and keeps them up.

However, I was never a massive fan, and in the end, I stopped watching matches because the football was so bad, and tactics so ridiculous/lacking: Three at the back, no matter the situation, long throws, samey subs, stubborn persistence with average players.

He'll get a great reception on return to Villa Park, and rightly so, but I don't miss him and his management at all.

Love him. Just wish he hadn't stuck with the 3/5 at the back for so long.

Would love it if he can keep Norwich up this season.

Why would we lock the thread? We've got an ex-Villa players still playing thread - should that be locked too?

Smith brought on more players in terms of their development than any other manager in my lifetime. That's his big differentiator. Unfortunately his game management let him down and ultimately cost him his job. Time will tell whether Gerrard is an upgrade, but I'm pretty certain that had Smith still been in charge we wouldn't have been watching Coutinho and Digne on Saturday.
