Beating Stoke 2-1 at Villa Park this afternoon, Mortimer with a screamer and Evans from the spot after Geddes had his goal ruled out and a penalty awarded. Stoke down to 10 men the filthy tramps.

That game against Stoke featured Brian Little and Mike Pejic who would only play another 26 games of professional football between them. If you add in Gary Shaw and to a certain extent Ken McNaught that team must be one of the unluckiest in terms of career wrecking injuries.

I watched that 2-1 win v Stoke this evening on +1, what a treat to see Brian Little and Gary Shaw playing together, and Cowans, Little and Mortimer combining for a sublime goal.

I record them and watch at leisure
I’m on 1979 at the moment
Always nice to be reminded of -

Just how solid and brilliant Jimmy Rimmer was
The driving force that was Dennis Mortimer
Kenny Swain Probably the most gifted attacking wing back, Beautiful to watch

A few weeks back they showed a couple of games on the same show and they both featured goalkeeping cock ups from players that went on to play for Villa. Mervyn Day had a nightmare in a West Ham shirt (I can't recall the opponents) and the usually reliable Jimmy Rimmer had a nightmare in an Arsenal shirt against Leicester.

Having caught this thread, I'm now watching a cup tie between West Ham and QPR from 1975!

Looking back, I'm amazed they could even run on those pitches, let alone play football.

Several other immediate observations:
No overseas players.
No black players
Only one substitute per team.

Great atmosphere though.

This Friday it's the FA Cup quarter final v West Ham from 1980, I'm not sure I'll be able to bear watching.

that game was literally the closest I've come to tears about the result of a football match - alongside the Moscow Spartak injury time job.

So we are on twice in the next 2 days - Cup quarter final - i honestly thought it was our year (West Ham were in the 2nd Division), to say I was gutted is an understatement

The 80-81 game against Leicester - if memory serves me correctly we can all enjoy a superb performance from Tony Morley
