Title: The Big Match Revisited
Post by: Flamingo Lane on September 20, 2021, 05:37:05 PM
I wasn't sure which part of the forum to put this, but I've put it here, as in half an hour or so's time the programme will feature Villa v Wolves from 1979, with Andy Gray playing for Wolves just after signing for them from us.  The 1-1 draw was a good one for us right then, as Ron Saunders was starting to put together the team that would go on to win the league and the European Cup the following two seasons, and this spirited performance at Wolves gave a good glimpse of the team's quality as it was taking shape.

Otherwise, I hope this thread can be used more generally for users to comment on what they've seen on the Big Match Revisited (currently to be viewed on ITV4 each weekday evening, usually just before 6pm).

I love The Big Match Revisited and I have got my old man into it too now. It is real old school with the majority of games played on mud without a blade of grass in sight and some challenges that belong in a mixed martial arts contest going totally unpunished.

I too share your slightly strange fascination with the various advertising hoardings from the old days when people rented their tellies from Rumbelows.

A German car company apparently. But I was more interested in the challenge from Kenny Burns on Ricky Villa
that deserved three months in Winson Green  ;D

Love TBMR, everything about it. The awkward interviews, giving out people’s full addresses who wrote in.

We even lost to Leyton Orient the other day for crying out loud!

The people's full addresses always amuses me. Also Brian Moore's rather condescending manner.

TBMR is brilliant

Bad Pitches
Bad Fouls
Bad Haircuts
Short Shorts
Crowd swells
Old fashioned stands
Parka’s
Yippi Aye Eh sang a lot slower
No shirt sponsors
Primitively small dug outs
Managers Big leather coats
massive lapels
Passing ball back to goalie

You can get all these on the ITV hub as well as i keep missing them when their actually on. There was a brilliant one i watched from a few weeks ago, it was the opening day of the season in maybe our title year 81 or year after. It featured Kevin Keegan making his debut for Southampton against Man City, with a really bizarre pre match feature of him heading a ball in what looked like a school gym.
Even better after they showed liverpool beating Palace 3-0 (same old!) they actually had a young Kenny Sansom and Clive Allen in the studio afterwards, doing a really awkward interview about how it all went wrong for their palace. Brilliant stuff.

One of the really enjoyable aspects of the programme is being able to watch players who we came to admire as Villa players, when they were playing for other teams, usually earlier in their careers. Given how many times he's been shown recently playing in goal for Arsenal, I was thinking the programme could easily have been titled Jimmy Rimmer Revisited, and I've recently also enjoyed seeing a very young Tony Morley playing in a No 8 shirt for Preston alongside a very less than young Nobby Stiles and Bobby Charlton (wearing No 11), and also Alex Cropley playing for Arsenal, and Alan Little for Southend.

Fully uniformed police constables diligently patrolling the touchline, and occasionally acting as auxiliary ball boys as and when an opportunity presented itself.

The Big Match was the London area programme so is very London-centric. If they could dig out any Star Soccer recordings there would be far more Villa coverage. I would imagine most of those tapes would have been wiped and re-used though.

Title: Re: The Big Match Revisited
Post by: john e on September 21, 2021, 05:17:54 PM
I saw a bad tackle on TBMR of which there are many to be fair
A player went into a tackle both feet off the ground proper scissored in, took out both legs of the opposing player right off the ground as he was bundled over by the touchline

Ball went out for a throw in
No foul was given, commentator never even mentioned it, opposing player just got up and carried on
This would have been a 100% red card today

I can’t remember that many more injuries back in the day,
I mean some of the tackles are horrendous yet I don’t remember loads of players getting injured all the time or is my memory playing tricks
I mean a famous team won the league by using only 14 players once

Shocking for my generation to see things like handball on the goal line not being even a card (as in Norwich in the League Cup Final 1975 and I think Argentina in the 1978 World Cup).

Also players like Ken Burns, that seemed to have no interest in playing the ball.

Watching on +1 now, its Autumn 1979, and Crystal Palace stroll to a 2-0 win v Manchester City, with John Burridge in goal for Palace, signed from Villa, and Steve Daley (remember him?), playing for City having signed for a record fee from Wolves, and nicely demonstrating how awful he turned out to be.

Just caught up on yesterday's Wolves Villa highlights. Wolves 'legend' John Richards elbowing an 18 year old Brendan Ormsby right in the face with blood everywhere. Of course Ormsby got sent off for retaliating whilst Richards stayed on the pitch. Good to see the refs were impartial even then. Molineaux really was a shithole.

I got my 11 year old to watch that with me last night, he couldnt work out why there was a huge mudbank on one side of the ground, brilliant.

Brendan Ormsby went to Ladywood Comp with my sister, she remains distant friends with his wife to this day, unfortunately hes been in very poor health for a number of years

Molineux always seemed to be stuck in the fifties. Circa 1979 we won three- or four-nil there on a horrible murky afternoon and as the fog rolled in it was like going back in time. You half-expected to see trolley buses on the way out.

That game against Stoke featured Brian Little and Mike Pejic who would only play another 26 games of professional football between them. If you add in Gary Shaw and to a certain extent Ken McNaught that team must be one of the unluckiest in terms of career wrecking injuries.

A few weeks back they showed a couple of games on the same show and they both featured goalkeeping cock ups from players that went on to play for Villa. Mervyn Day had a nightmare in a West Ham shirt (I can't recall the opponents) and the usually reliable Jimmy Rimmer had a nightmare in an Arsenal shirt against Leicester.

Having caught this thread, I'm now watching a cup tie between West Ham and QPR from 1975!

Looking back, I'm amazed they could even run on those pitches, let alone play football.

Several other immediate observations:
No overseas players.
No black players
Only one substitute per team.

Great atmosphere though.

Horrible day. Thought we'd done enough to get a draw until the dodgy pen.
Definitely the most intimidating away day I've ever been on. Knew it would be as soon as I saw Police and stewards letting their fans into our end before kick off.

Yes, I was there that day and remember their fans being let in to our end, and without paying. There was an element of tension in the stand throughout the game but for someone who went away regularly at that time it wasn't too unusual. West Ham away was always one I attended with trepidation.

Upton Park was the most intimidating away ground for me. My first visit was in 1988 as a teenager and we drew 2-2. I think we had gone two up but me and my mate were late getting into the ground so we only saw the two West Ham goals. The following year we played them in a League Cup tie and I was late getting there and was locked out so I just had to wander around the surrounding area for the duration of the game, which wasn't much fun.

That night was the closest I’ve ever come to a serious crush at a game. People were climbing up into the rafters to escape it, and many were forced onto the perimeter of the pitch. I dread to think what would have occurred if there had been fences.

Enjoyed watching the match against Leicester on Saturday morning (did look to see if I could see myself behind the goal, brought back some fantastic memories), made me smile when Tony Morley scored and they put a virtual band aid across his mouth, as he was obviously having a few words to say at Mr. Saunders.

The Villa strip of that season is fantastic.

Notice we are on again this Saturday (Forest at home), if I remember correctly, we had lost to Ipswich the Wednesday before this match?

One of the more interesting non Villa games on next week as it features the Bosco Jankovic inspired Middlesbrough v Ipswich game which was a huge game for the history of our club. I saw it the night we won the league but never since as it’s not on YouTube etc, my memory may be playing tricks but I’m sure the Boro fans were chanting Villa!

Good cross-header from Bosco near the end to ensure Villa's title. Looked like a fairly weakened team that Ipswich put out; perhaps they knew the writing was on the wall and were resting a few for the Uefa Cup final.

Saw the game on Saturday from 81-82 season Boro away 3-3 - Gary Shaw's goal was fantastic, but dont know what Sid was thinking with the back pass?

I think its likely to be the 3-3 draw with Man Utd in 1981, its a typo on Sky.

Yes, looks like it, the Man City game was in January.

Sadly, we seemed to have lost another channel some months ago.....the heavyroller....featured many matches including England
back in the 1950's and also a couple of Villa games in the early 1960's.
Rare to find any Villa material during that entire decade, probably the most notable was that home 2-6 caning versus Chelsea
in September 1966 with those Blue Submarine caterwauling cockneys massed in the Trinity Road paddock.
I think it was Tony Hateley's final game for us and his departure pretty much condemned us to an abysmally feeble relegation come season's end.

Only just got round to watching that. Wasn't one of our best days that season but incredibly windy weather didn't make for a cohesive game. Gary Shaw still oozed class nevertheless.

On the same programme was Manchester United against Ipswich. Watching that you realise how much we take for granted nowadays the quality of the pitches Premier League clubs play on. That was at Old Trafford in early Spring, not a non league ground in January yet the pitch was in shocking condition to play passing football.

If you watch the Villa v Man Utd game after that they show Sheffield United -you want to see their pitch!!

It looked like the Baseball Ground in the mid 70s.

Yes, the Blades' pitch was a real mud-heap.
