Two realistic chances to win a trophy every season.

I’ll never understand the modern psyche that they’re not important.

Always remember hearing a Wigan fan on the radio when asked would you rather have stayed up than win the FA Cup. He said, “I can’t imagine telling the grandkids all about the year we finished 17th - I will be able to tell them how we won the Cup at Wembley though.

Trophies. That’s what it’s all about, for me.
Totally agree. I think its possibly a generational thing but younger fans don't get anywhere near as misty-eyed about the cups as older fans do - the thought of playing weakened sides in FA Cup quarterfinals in front of half-full stadiums and reduced ticket prices would have been rightly unthinkable back in the day. No-one will EVER tell me the game is the better for it.

Completely agree, would love to see us win a throphy again, or to see us win the FA Cup for the first tim in 60 odd years - think leicester last year showed what it can mean.  These plastic clubs can keep there 4th places - I'd swap the FA cup.

100% think the way forward to making football less of a closed shop is making the FA Cup and League Cup have Champions League places

Probably because they have no experience of what it feels like to win one. You’d have to be 30 to have any real memory of our last cup win. That must be the longest gap in our history.

It isn't. 1920-1957 holds the record, though it is quite close if you count seasons rather than years as the cup was cancelled between 1939/40 and 1945/46 while the league didn't return until 1946/47.

There DEFINITELY was not a league in 1945/46 and don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

If he does, can we avoid any jinxy comments, please. Toronto Villa is a regular culprit. Feel free to slag him off after the game (RB, that is, not TV).

Barkley's the type of cnut who would scored tomorrow night and then run to the Villa fans and cup his big ears.

Reckon we should play a 6-4 formation.

Before we get so morally superior, think back eighteen months to our last final appearance and how many comments there were on here about distractions and rather lose the semi than a league match.

I'd prioritise winning something over anything else, but I'd rather get knocked out in the fourth round than get beat in the final.

I appreciate that that's not a decision that's available to made at this juncture, so plough on through to that final, boys.

Looking at their squad, I'd guess a very strong one even with Man City at the weekend.

If we’re being realistic, we’re not going to win the league and not make the top 6 either. So, why not have a go at the cups this season? Nothing to lose.

I think top 6 is achievable. Fair enough, the chances of us displacing either of the Manc clubs, Liverpool or Chelsea is quite remote, and catching up Leicester would be a remarkable achievement ... but I don't think we're that far behind Spurs/West Ham/... now.

Tho I agree we should have a go at the cups. I don't get why any team in the 7th-14th place bracket wouldn't go all out for them.

It sounds as though Tuchel intends to make quite a few changes with the early kick-off against Man City in mind. This still means internationals like Chilwell coming in but also bang average ones like Loftus-Cheek.

I hope we put out a strong team because we can win this game.

The League Cup has provided some of my best moments as a Villa fan. Let's give it our best shot.
