Villa Foundation
« on: June 09, 2021, 05:49:29 PM »
My 10 yr old son is slightly autistic and dyspraxic which makes fitting in with everyday life difficult and sport even more difficult. A fantastic community football team has supported him and let him get involved in competitive mainstream games which is the best thing that's ever happened to him (and they play in claret and blue). My old dad suffered from Alzheimer's and I had to give up my semi and final tickets for the play offs to be with him for his last few weeks.

The Foundation supports, amongst other things, dementia cafes and local community football so I am abseiling down the Holte End to raise money for the foundation. I'm also cycling 50 miles to get to VP from the shires where all Villa fans come from (I'm a born and bred Brummie.) If anybody wants to support the Foundation the link is

Good luck Mike, happy to support such a great cause (and a bit of discomfort for you  ;)).

Thanks for all the donations so far, I'm blown away. I'm looking forward to cycling the part of the route from my mom's old house in Kings Norton to the city along the Rea Valley route but less sure about getting from there to VP...

Well, I  did it. You know how all Blues fans live in Birmingham and we all live in the Shires... I went past a house in Malvern with a gigantic England fan, the equivalent of many bedsheets but properly printed, with the heartwarming words Zulus and SOTV on it. Sadly, the signs outside Wasthills had been taken down so I couldn't take a photo of myself in my Villa cycling top in front of it.

Rode past my old house in King's Norton (or at least where it used to be before the council gave up and demolished the whole estate!), fell down a bank between Droitwich and Alvechurch, just about avoided ending up in the canal but got some bumps, bruises and a damaged rib, saw a heron round about Selly Oak, cycled through some very bemused and pissed crowds of young Brums in Brindley Place then got my first view of the inside of Villa Park in a long time.

The abseil was a doddle and just a pity that they slowed you down if you tried to go too fast. To top it off, I landed almost exactly in my sisters season ticket seat. Oh, and they let my wife have a go, too.

Thanks again for all the donations which are massively appreciated. The money raised by the event (which should eventually reach £10,000) went to a dementia cafe, which I am really pleased about for the reasons above relating to my dad.

My wife, who is not local and doesn't follow football anyway was stunned when someone saw me loading my bike on the car and said 'I know who you are, well done, blah, blah.' H and V has a great bunch of people following it. Thanks again.

Well done Mike. I'm sure the bruises were worth it.

Well done Mike, only just noticed this, donation duly made.

Just a note that they do have a sign outside Wasthills but it’s much smaller than the previous one, almost as though they’re embarrassed by who they are.

Chris, thanks for the donation. I normally see it when I visit my mom. Are you from round there too? I grew up by Primrose Hill Junior School.
