My problem with it yesterday was that although I think Smith picked the best 11 to start it under the circumstances he didn’t play them where you would have expected. El Ghazi right, Young left wing and Buendia fuck knows where was baffling. It should have been El Ghazi left, Buendia right and Young supporting McGinn and Nakamba in the middle.
Add to that Nakamba, Cash and Targett pushing on too much and we were all over the place, whether that was Smiths instructions or whether they decided to do it themselves im not sure but it was stupid either way. We also looked rusty with poor passing and positional sense in defence.
I wouldn’t really blame any one player too much, the positives were that Bailey certainly looked a cracking player right from the off and Young alleviated any concerns about the full backs getting any injuries this season, he looked miles better than Taylor and Elmo, I’d imagine he could fill in either side.

Oh and their 2 first half goals were lucky anyway especially the second although I don’t doubt they deserved to be in front.

My issue with him yesterday was how slow and ponderous he was with the ball. Granted that’s partly due to a lack of passing options available to him. But he certainly wasn’t high tempo or driving the play as he’s known for. Just dithered with it, then got dispossessed.

I don't care if he was shit in his first game, it happens. I'm more intrigued on where he has been brought in to play. If we are moving him in from the right, which I think is what he is going to be doing, then he'll need time to adapt his game. The argument is whether you should be doing that at all but I'm far from going to judge him after one game.

Were most of his goals last season deflections? If so, maybe it's a unique talent - intentional deflections.

He's like Captain America with his shield or Angles McManus. Thought I'd play to two different audiences there.

He's an excellent player but a right midfielder / winger.  I was surprised how people thought he'd slot straight into a '10'  He's probably capable of it, but it may take a bit of time.  As things stand we've bought 3 right wingers in the last two summers and look light on the left and at 10.

Bailey must be earmarked for playing on the left, surely? If not we haven't replaced Greasy at all, and have over-stocked the right hand side to an absurd level.

Yes, I think Bailey will play on the left, but he's on record saying he prefers the right.  I think cutting in was a big part of his game.  I still think he's a good signing, but it does feel a bit unbalanced.

Needs to play in a role in which we can get him facing goal. That could be wide right, but that either leaves one one of Ings, Watkins or Bailey, or has us with two Up Top, or with Ings as a number ten. What we need is to have him as a ten playing further away from the main striker, almost as an 8, and for that we need to free up McGinn a bit, and for that we need a really good defensive midfielder.

Yes . This whole plans in place by the club is sheer nerve.
Clearly it's been a strategy that involved selling out best player.
But then replacing with various choices that we could get
I'm not convinced by what they claims and as it really been suggested no more attaching signings it seems a mismash of 3 signings to replace Grealish and a cheap free signings and loan of Young and Tuanzebe.
They can spin that as a strengthen of resources but seems like majority of transfer business was afforded because of the sale.
If we had kept Grealish and got these signings too then we're talking bonanza
Really feel should have Abraham for the long term than Ings.
Better fit for the squad.

thing is you can only judge him on what we’ve seen so far
And let’s face it he was a bit rubbish yesterday
That’s not writing him off like some people get all upset about that’s just saying what we saw

Exactly the same as Leon Bailey
I only saw him for 20 odd minutes but thought he looked good
My judgement after those few minutes is he’ll be a Cracking player for us
So am I judging him after a few minutes yeah I am and I reckon he’ll be okay

As for Buendia He was the best player in the championship last year so I doubt he’ll be that bad again

Be happy with Cantwell. As long as we get a bit hard bastard in the middle to go with him
